When I say that I've learned a lot about the Holocaust by living as the parent of a trans kid in the 2020s, I don't mean that I think Republicans are Nazis. No. What I've learned is that Nazis were just the Republicans of their era, and of their system. #ProtectTransKids

Visible, yet vulnerable: What journalists can learn from how we covered the attack on trans rights in Trump’s first 100 days.
One big takeaway: Based on analysis of a representative sample of articles, 70% of stories about anti-trans executive orders didn’t quote trans people.

A short story about @shaheen.senate.gov ~2004/5. She’d lost a race so joined the Institute of Politics at Harvard Kennedy School as a Fellow, as one does. I was a pregnant grad student. I asked her advice about running for office as a mom. She told me to wait my turn. I never sought her out again.

The fact that seven of us just walked into our pharmacy, asked for COVID and flu vaccines, and received them immediately and free after insurance, feels like a stroke of luck.

Actual, real, happy tears.
Today is an absolute rebuke of anti-transgender politics, and a real sign that the anti-trans panic is fading.

From VA Gov to Loudoun County to New Jersey to New York City and Pennsylvania, anti-trans Republicans are falling left and right.
Democrats are currently ahead in 63 (!!!) races in the Virginia House of Delegates.

If this holds, it would be one of the largest state legislature swings in the last 4 years.

Its an absolute bloodbath for anti-trans Republicans.

Here we go (again).
The Trump administration will soon be releasing two Medicaid rules that would ban medicaid funding for gender affirming care for trans youth and any Medicaid reimbursements to any organization that provides care to trans youth. This would be a de facto national ban

Trump pushes an end to medical care for transgender youth nationally
The White House plans to bar hospitals that treat transgender children and youth from getting any Medicare and Medicaid payments. The move would affect trans youth who have private insurance, too.

instead, he’s doing this.

1. As SNAP benefits expire, 42,000,000 hungry people may turn to the USDA website.

Now, the website blames their hunger on transgender people and immigrants.

It's a cynical ploy, an an indication that anti-trans measures are a Trump priority for the shutdown.

The @nytimes.com decided last year what the story was; Trump II was the righteous punishment visited upon their interns and junior staffers and grandchildren for being so annoying about MeToo and BLM, and once they understood that and repented, they could have democracy back.
Just insane thing for a NYT editor to say publicly:

One of the most perverse ideas on the anti-trans side is that trans people are instantly affirmed and celebrated by everyone when they come out and that acceptance is driving a social contagion.

It's the ultimate form of gaslighting against our community.

The relative power Wisconsin has is especially scary when you consider how long we’ve been drastically underfunding public education as a state.
Gavin Newsom would take a puppy from an orphan, rip the puppy apart with his bare hands and eat it while the orphan screamed if he thought it would win him one vote in Wisconsin.

This includes a majority of Independent voters, casting doubt on the narrative that Democrats need to pull back on transgender people.

This is absolutely true. If the NYT covered this the way they covered trans care, you all would finally understand what dangerous shit their trans care coverage has been.
i have to say, as a trans journalist who has covered the "trans debate" for about a decade now, there is no daylight between how the trump administration and conservatives lie about tylenol and autism and how they've lied about youth trans care.

Read the whole thread. But also please, call your Dem congresspeople to make sure they are holding the line here!
9. If these anti-LGBTQ+ provisions make it through, they would lock some of the harshest restrictions on trans people into federal law and hand Trump a stronger platform to target trans rights nationwide. Only if Dems stand firm for their trans and queer constituents will this outcome be stopped.

I believe this to my core. They're using trans people as a test case to dismantle individual rights in the US.
Trans rights are not the rights of a tiny minority, trans rights are everyone’s rights to self-determination, control of our bodies, and a society where opportunity and aesthetics are not restricted by sex assigned at birth

You should support and defend trans people because trans people are people
