in a democratic republic (and really in all times and places) the slavish hunger to be in the thrall of a strongman or a king is the ultimate moral degeneracy.

What do you MEAN the president audibly SHIT himself live on camera and they immediately cancelled the press conference and rushed everyone out of the room like it's a fire drill, and it happened two days ago, and I'm just hearing about it NOW?

A walk through snowy woods on a clear, cold night is up there in terms of nature experiences. All things considered I would probably prefer to live in a warmer region, but I would miss nights like this.

Worse than Kent State, really than any episode I can think of probably dating back to Reconstruc & earlier b/c

1. continuing, not 1 off.
2. organized, not individual ofcrs losing it
3. literally at hand of federal government, which is
4. immediately lying & circling the wagons to prevent inves.

There no longer exists a shred of political or moral difference between an armed DHS agent and a British redcoat on the streets of Boston or Lexington in 1775. The DHS man is worse, actually, as he has volunteered for service against his neighbor, is paid handsomely, and could quit any time.

Watching Dolly Parton's A Smoky Mountain Christmas for the first time as an adult, and it's now clear to me that the reason there are so many orphans in this tiny mountain town is that the witch-woman has been straight up murdering their parents.

Brought in the mail after clearing the snow off my parents driveway. This is the kind of horseshit they get in the mail all the time nowadays. Normie Republicans (and former Rs) may not have known who Charlie Kirk was before, but they sure are familiar with him now.

Emmet Otter opens with a song making fun of a fat woman and her comically large bathing suit???

Watching this beloved children's Christmas classic for the first time. Nephew finds Grandma Otter's big bathing suit indeed very funny. (Shaking my head so everyone knows I disagree.)

The first cookie plate of the year always makes me feel like such an ungrateful snob, because imo most Christmas cookies fall squarely into "kind of you to go to the effort, but I'd rather you hadn't” territory.

Yes! And more than just facts, stories can impart moral lessons through their structure, even when they're not obviously didactic. Characters model behavior, and the story consequences subtly teach us whether it was wise or unwise, etc. That is mostly absent from unscripted/disjointed entertainment.
media used to passively educate people. we even briefly had *intentional* education. for as much as we all mocked Very Special Episodes, that shit worked. commercials used to bust out fancy vocab as a novelty. game shows taught facts. all of that has been replaced with Love Island and game streaming

I've driven through this place hundreds of times, but for the rest of my life I won't be able to pass without remembering the words of this contemptible asshole Republican county chairman: "We’re not going to sell out our birthright for a bean burrito."

My sensibilities are pretty tenderhearted towards small animals even though I work on a farm, but I have to admit it is regrettably very amusing sometimes what mean little shits cats can be. Shaking my head the whole time so everyone knows I disagree etc.
I think we sometimes really have trouble understanding how little shit there was to do prior to like 1950, watching a cat fuck with mice would have been in like the 90th percentile for amusement for much of history

Yes! I've considered this a possibility since reading 13th century monk Bartholomaeus Anglicus' description of cats. He's clearly amused by their behavior, as no doubt humans at the time of domestication were. The entertainment value is not entirely separate from their usefulness as mousers,
one of the funniest things about cats is that its really increasingly clear that their entertainment value is a big part of their domestication
