A thing about AI in higher ed right now is that half of us are scrambling to deal with the implosion of our information environment that broke reading/writing/source verification, while the other half is trying to achieve a massive institutional buy-in of the very thing that's causing the implosion

I can't express how damaging this is, music and languages aren't just optional extras, they are at the core of what a university does: cultivate knowledge and culture in the next generation. And if they'll cut those, what's next? It's institutional self-destruction.

Horrific, stupid news from @uniofnottingham.bsky.social — they are closing their music department. Apparently they all found out suddently in a meeting yesterday.

It is one of the best music departments in the country — solidarity with my colleagues and their students

It's not just music and language courses- it's 48 courses across the university.

But here's the thing- our UCU colleagues at other universities (like @Cardiffucu.bsky.social) have faced the exact same threats, fought back, and won. So we can too.

I'm an 'old man', so obviously I listen to Radio 4...I have just heard Evan Davies, seemingly seriously, say "I asked ChstGPT to summarise this and it said..."

What!?

The story is about AI, but this jovial usage of 'Generative' AI in journalism is ridiculous and I see/hear is a lot at the moment.
