ASS is short for acephalic spermatozoa syndrome in which head and tail of sperm are detached⛓️💥, commonly caused by mutations in the gene encoding for SUN5. Using in situ cryo-ET❄️🔬 we find that SUN5 forms a protein lattice in the nuclear envelope (NE) at the head-tail junction of mammalian sperm.1/4
