It saddens me that the Australian and New Zealand spelling of "mandarine" (the fruit) is being replaced by the American and UK spelling "mandarin". And I think spellcheck is a big part of the problem, because it still marks mandarine as incorrect, even with the Australian English dictionary.

I love this kind of fantasy character. I dunno, I just love high fantasy that doesn't have any humans in it.

This is very good advice. I’ll add that at least some of the scenes in a story should take place on a hill. Especially if the scene takes place in a city, adding a little slope that the architecture needs to contend with can add a lot of believable interest to the environment.
Oh also don't forget to put kids and old people in your comic. I always forget the kids, but even as a background element they create a sense of history that extends before and after the present story, which is important for stakes as well as verisimilitude

I always love chatting with @susanapolo.bsky.social, and this year's episode where we talk about things we didn't get a chance to write about and/or talk about as much as we wanted to is a good time. I get us very in the weeds — low res comic art???? — but it's a delight, as per usual. Listen up!
Journalist @susanapolo.bsky.social joined Off Panel to discuss post-Polygon living and comic topics we wished we could have written about/seen more discussion of, like: Reversed comic movie energies! The muted comics conversation! Worldcon! Crossover mania! Expanding genres! More!

Some of you will remember my posts raving about Sal Buscema.

He's gone now.

He did some unforgettable work with @jmdematteis.bsky.social and his run on The Incredible Hulk was an indelible part of my childhood.

He had a good run. To be appreciated in your own time is the best thing for artists.

You have no idea how exciting it is to have a digital comics store where the search is good and actually works. Kudos to @sweetshop.app because I know how much refining metadata goes into making a functional search feature.

So, I caught up with Chip Zdarsky's Public Domain (sublime) and the comic within the comic, The Domain. And now I can't stop thinking about another comic that goes the other direction... A comic about Chip Zdarsky creating Public Domain and The Domain.

The collaborator panel is also another great way to explore comics. I’m really enjoying this.
I mean just look at the care here, from the badges with the issue numbers, indicators where you are in the series, to creator profiles. This isn’t “content” this is comics.

The @sweetshop.app team have managed to create the feeling you get when visiting the best comic shops.

Testing @sweetshop.app and folks, it's a gem. Even on my 2018 iPad it's smooth and responsive. Those page turns feel just right, the interactions intuitive, and the care put into the categorisation for discovery of comics is exceptional. This is the comic book app we need

One of the most reliable ways I find new comics is by following editors who work on books I love and seeing what else they’ve worked on.

Guess what? @sweetshop.app lets me do exactly that!

I think it's important to balance the doom-talk of making a living doing comics (especially exclusively the comics that you WANT to do) by pointing out that while it is very hard and takes a few years and a lot of output to get there, plenty of folks make their living from comics.

TikTok is under right wing billionaire control now. Plan your exit strategy.
This morning, I recorded a video on TikTok about why DHS’s arguments for the power to enter homes without judicial warrants in immigration cases are bunk.

Nine hours later, TikTok still says my video is “under review,” and can’t be shared.

Well, here’s a link:

Make friends. Real ones.

Maybe they’ll be your collaborators and maybe they won’t. Maybe your careers will grow together, maybe they won’t. That part doesn’t matter as much as real honest connection.

Develop real friendships in the space with people you can trust.

I mostly just stay off Twitter altogether but after double checking that the Walter Hudson post was still up I ran across this and just had to share so the Romancelandians who bought hand warmers could hear about the PROFESSIONAL GRADE LOGISTICS.
