The youth of today - what have we done?
January 1, 2026 at 11:11 PM
Having just been to visit our new grandson, it occurred to me that, given a fair wind and the absence of global catastrophe, he'll still be around in the 22nd century.

We are overdue a technological step change - the quantum computer turns out to be an eavesdropper on the wider universe perhaps?
We are more than a quarter of the way through the twenty-first century.

If that doesn't sound futuristic, nothing will.

I've often thought that Brexit finally dies when the absurdity of it overtakes, in the collective wisdom of the British, the embarrassment of admitting the error.

We're going to get there in 2026.
It can't happen soon enough, we must #RejoinEU now!
Just a gif of the EU flag projected onto the London Eye as part of Mayor Sadiq Khan's London's New Year's Day fireworks 😀

The UK is £90 billion a year poorer because of Brexit i.e. tax rises and spending cuts, it's absurd

One day soon the madness will end and the UK will #RejoinEU ☺️

This is true but fails to absolve Calamity Cameron from responsibility.

As the architect of the Brexit disaster, his name is rightly carved on the keystone of the crumbling edifice.
10th Anniversary of Brexit 🇪🇺🇬🇧 -
Cameron admitting Johnson only backed Brexit as a career punt. Johnson didn’t believe a word of it. He gambled the country for his own ego, assumed Remain would win, then rode the chaos like a lying opportunist. #ukpolitics

Fascinating stuff.

I've often thought that previous New Year predictions should be analysed for success/failure. Learning what works and what doesn't seems like an interesting candidate for an AI training case.

As we nuclear types are prone to say:

'Operational Experience - Use It or Become It'
Results of the 2025 Forecasting Contest are out!

374 valid entries, 27 who beat the wisdom of crowds - and one winner...

Congratulations to ‘Firestone’, a manager at TfL, who beat the entire field!

The lack of self-awareness in this section of British society is illuminating.

Those who lionise the RAF pilots of 1940, who saved Britain in her 'hour of need', without processing that Britain was fighting the beliefs they themselves now espouse.

Nazis are who they are - it's not a nationality.
If you were personally not racist but you ran a party that contained this level of racism, you'd resign on the basis you had somehow ended up organising racists into a serious campaigning force, which had never been your intention.

On the other hand, if you *are* a racist...
"More than a third (37%) of Reform UK voters said they would be prouder of Britain if there were fewer people from minority ethnic backgrounds in a decade’s time, and 10% [compared to 3% overall] said it was important to have white skin to be a good British citizen."

Another year over.

Looking back, not a vintage one for many reasons including the tragic loss of Blondie's drummer, Clem Burke.

I put this, No Exit, their '99 comeback album through the old KT88 anodes today and, usual quirky genre jumping aside, it has stood the years very well.

So long Clem,

By some bizarre fluke of genetics, I appear to still be alive.

What were the odds?

Probably have the mop-up squad arriving at my door with the big syringe any moment now.

Probably going to be used as leverage in our so-called trade deal with the US.
The UK currently uses US payment systems like visa and Mastercard (and without being part of the US). Is there any reason it won’t be able to use the EU alternative even if it is not in the EU?
Sounds promising.

Ah, Brexit.

Sorry - as you were.

Ah, yes. the good ol' 'Lie Radius'

As all students of falsehood understand very well, every lie requires further lies to hold back that pesky reality thing.

The lie radius required expands exponentially until, like the plume of a volcano, it eventually collapses into a pyroclastic flow of truth.
When one makes up that many lies it's inevitable the lies will conflict with each other. It's more proof that it's all been lies.

The EU plans to implement a digital payment service which will be free of charge and replace the Visa/Mastercard/Paypal/Google/Apple methods which all charge 1-3% for nothing, it will be the standard payment method in the EU.

This the exactly what needs to be happening.

Welcome to the British Empire tactics of the eighteenth century.

They'll be recreating the East India Company next.
It’s the “for other purposes” part that really nails it home.
It would mean private US ships could attack a range of ships from other countries.
For decades the US has taken the lead on cracking down on international piracy.
This would instead put us on the list.

2 things the car industry doesn't need are divergent standards and tariffs.

Membership of the EU Single Market solves the first and the EU Customs Union the second.
