Allow me to (re)introduce myself. I’m a German-Irish writer and translator, disciple of Drndić, Sebald and Benjamin. I write about memory, nostalgia and identity by way of my German-Polish family history full of spies, forced labour, and lost homes. I'm adding some essays and books of mine below.

I have never seen a look of contempt as pure as the look in this Ukrainian soldier’s eyes when he faced his Russian captor about to execute him.
Three years ago on this day.
Soldier Oleksandr Matsiyevsky had his last cigarette at his surrounded dugout, shouted “Glory to Ukraine!” and was executed by Russians on the spot.
He lives on with us all forever ever since that day.

To end the year I’m allowing myself a writing retreat by the Mahaweli, Sri Lanka’s longest river, and from my homestay I can see the Dumbara Mountains. These are strange times, and yet I hope we will find serenity, hope and kindness in the new year, and Vladimir Putin finds himself in The Hague.

Walter Benjamin wrote that the work of translation is “to liberate the language imprisoned in a work" to find the “pure language” of “the unfathomable, the mysterious, the ‘poetic’”. This is all, of course, utterly anathema to AI
As a multiple language speaker it's also frustrating to see people using AI for translation because the English speaking world tends to treat translators like workers for hire instead of co authors of text and this feels like more of it. Translation at the literary level is creative work.
