For all that the media has spent years freaking out about what social media does to our brains, I don’t understand why there appears to be little effort to grapple with the fact that these chatbots are, for some not insignificant portion of the population, literally psychosis machines

This “it’s impractical to avoid AI” stance is frustrating to me because no it isn’t? At least for authors who have direct control over their work. Not a single GenAI tool touched my books at any part of the creation process. I know this for a fact because I know my software and what my editor uses.

You’re right, that is unpopular. And selfish. And greedy.

And let’s so fucking for real - JKR was NEVER an indie author.

"Remember, the AI is fed with the work of actual humans. Why do you think that is, exactly?

If you use it, it means you’re replacing people.

People who could’ve done the job better.

People who actually did the job, and now their work is pilfered and duped."
Apparently I'm doing this -- my open letter to that open latter about AI in writing and publishing. I emerged from Hibernation Week to write it, so god only knows how much sense it makes. But at least a human wrote it, so that's nice.

Bonus: picture of my "cat," sweet baby Boomba.

Hold on, gimme a sec. I wrote it. I'm the author. I know all about it... I just need like five minutes to calibrate my brain and process how to properly reply when someone asks about my writing.

I guarantee that if I just completely lost my soul & started cranking out AI books, my career would be over. if you put in the work to make something good and born from your own mind, the people who become your readers/fans WANT THAT. They don’t want generic robot slop. Using AI is authorial death.

My best recent anecdote—we were asked to give a more “story telling” design presentation at work this holiday. The other team used chatgpt to write theirs, advised me to do the same.

My team took time to write something we were all happy with & nailed it. The other team’s was a total crash and burn
always baffles me when I see “but writers/creatives/etc. HAVE to use AI to remain competitive!”

besides AI writing being worse, there’s no evidence it gives any real advantage over not using it. you’d still have to fix all its screw ups, which takes time you could use to do it right the first time.

The lack of critical thinking ability in this piece is astounding.
Look, this person doesn't understand what process is and how keeping it writer-based supports style and narrative, period. Thus, several things she suggests harmless if AI-driven are actually harmful. Also, the fallacy that AI is inevitable belies evidence of a bubble 1/2 file770.com/erin-underwo...
