In the Nordics, we're quite worried about what's next, in particular for Greenland. Some of that is directed as a concern for the prime minister of Denmark - however, with Denmark having elections this year, I am also concerned for electoral integrity, Danish democracy and the risks of interference.

The new Swedish–American Defense Cooperation Agreement gives Trump effectively unlimited use of Swedish military bases, which he can use to threaten Denmark and seize Greenland www.svt.se/nyheter/utri...
Uhhhh. So to be clear this would be the end of the transatlantic alliance and Europeans should really make that clear.

I think what China understood and the rest of the world has been slow to do is that Trump is running a protection racket more than a trade or foreign policy.

He wants the payoffs more than the invasion or regime change.

I would love to see political leadership from NORDEFCO -countries (Nordic 5) announcing a months long “long-time” planned exercise in 🇬🇱 (Greenland).

Protection of critical infrastructure & securing political leadership against external attack could be two exercise tracks.

Read anything that will give you the clarity to see what needs to be done and the strength to do it. Idc, go watch Star Wars. This is a marathon, not a sprint. These books are your Gatorade, to replenish when you’re running low and out of fuel

liberal commentator, 4 strips

1. "relax, no way Trump will attack Colombia/Cuba now"

(USA attacks Colombia/Cuba)

2. "c'mon, he won't really go for Mexico!"

(USA attacks Mexico)

3. "you're mad to think he'll really invade Greenland!"

(USA attacks Greenland)

4. "Canada? No way!"

But, I hear you cry, the US is not a signatory to the Rome Statute and therefore not subject to ICC jurisdiction. Well, that's just like, their opinion, man. The ICC also claims jurisdiction over acts by any person or nation committed on the territory of state parties, which includes Venezuela.

This is an extraordinary posting by the wife of one of Trump's closest advisers Steve Miller. Combined with recent statements that the US "needs" Greenland and its strive to dominate the western hemisphere, threats against Greenland must be taken very seriously.

🟡 NEW: The New York Times and Washington Post learned of a secret US raid on Venezuela soon before it was scheduled to begin Friday night — but held off publishing what they knew to avoid endangering US troops.

I woke up having drafted in my sleep the outline of a series of books called The Medieval Bosnian Surgeons' Insurance Association about an Ottoman loss adjuster. There were sword fights with pirates.

I was wondering yesterday why Venezuela is such a big *importer* of refined oil, and this explains it.
Venezuela ships this blend because it has to mix their main crude oil reserve, from the Orinoco belt (which is EXTREMELY heavy, gravity 8° or so) with lighter crude from elsewhere for it to be shippable.

And that’s the problem with Venezuela’s oil reserves: they’re basically sludge.

OK, crash course in oil. Oil has two main gradings, viscosity (light or heavy) and sulfur (sweet or sour). A light (low viscosity) and sweet (low sulfur) oil is easier to process into gasoline and other products than a heavy and sour one, so the light & sweet oil commands a premium price.
I know several oil barons, I’ve had the oil and gas industry as clients in a past life: none of them want the Venezuelan oil, it’s dog shit quality and getting the PDVSA fields up to modern standards would take 20 years! It’s just trump being stuck in 1987
At this point the oil barons hardly even care (they can pivot to renewables too). It’s just gender and internal combustion brain

Not the most important thing today, but given the fact that recent resolutions in the EU Parliament on Venezuela were carried by the EPP with all the far-right groups - now literally called the Venezuela majority - how the EU Parliament will take a position on Trump's Venezuela occupation.

Some thoughts on what Trump has done in Venezuela and what it might mean for US national security. Caveat: not a Latin America scholar so this is focused on US policy. Clearly huge consequences for Venezuela that others can address.

First, despite the buildup, I didn't think Trump would do it.
