That’s the thing! Being smart isn’t any kind of protection. Studies show that critical thinking doesn’t transfer well between subjects. I only write poetry when I’m mad and feeling helpless about it. I have one (1) poem I have to write for the end of Phobos and Deimos that has to actually be good, and not just angry. Will it be good? Too early to say.

This is a really good thread, with some really innovative and believable reasons someone might need a wheelchair, even in Star Trek. I think number 6 (this is a temporary situation) has the strongest reasoning over any type of scifi story. But they’re all good.
I have a friend who said, of Starfleet Academy, that this took them out of it - that seeing a person in a wheelchair in the 32nd century seemed unrealistic, since medicine in Star Trek "should be able to cure whatever was wrong with them."
