my main takeaways from listening to the Supreme Court oral argument today are

-the writing is on the wall for the Voting Rights Act
-the Republican justices are now throwing racist spaghetti at that wall; they'll pass of whatever sticks as the opinion's rationale

The Conservative Justices Have So Many Ideas For How to Kill the Voting Rights Act
The Republican justices already know where they’re going. They just have to figure out which route they’re going to take to get there.

This dynamic of Young Republicans staking out positions far to the right of older, more "normie" Republicans has been a feature of the US conservative movement since the 1960s. Over time those further right elements just got incorporated into the mainstream. bsky.app/profile/seth...
In 1966 the New Jersey Young Republicans had a habit of singing racist and antisemitic songs at their gatherings. The lyrics to one went “Riding the Reich in my Mercedes Benz, shooting every kike, saving all my friends." Hartford Courant, 13 February 1966.

As @propublica.org reported, "at least three of Trump’s Cabinet members call multiple homes their primary residences on mortgages."

No indictments for them, because this is how a fascist regime works. "For my friends, everything; for my enemies, the law."

Is there a better indication of how superficial and unhelpful mainstream media has become than that they are cutely musing about whether the domestic terrorist who changed "The Department of Defense" to "The Department of War" will get a Nobel Peace Prize—instead of reporting the fascism/terrorism.

Funny thing about that ...

Definitional second-class citizen status if the only probable cause is based on appearance.

And let's not pretend that hasn't always been the case or that this is new.

The 2016 election will haunt us indefinitely. SCOTUS mattered.

A key argument against "separate but equal" was intent to humiliate. Even if you maintained a degree of true "equality," at the core of segregation was the assertion that Black people were inferior to white people and shouldn't share spaces with them.

This is core of Trump's immigration policy.

This is one good illustration why diversity on the court matters: Sotomayor can imagine a version of the world where this ruling would affect a younger version of herself, her family and people that look like her. Kavanaugh cannot.
Justice Sotomayor, joined by Kagan and Jackson, in dissent: "We should not have to live in a country where the Government
can seize anyone who looks Latino, speaks Spanish, and appears to work a low wage job. Rather than stand idly by while our constitutional freedoms are lost, I dissent."

The Minneapolis shooter was apparently a fan of several mass murderers who were motivated by the same "Great Replacement Theory" that has pretty much taken over the Republican Party.
After showing his guns emblazoned with racial slurs, far-right slogans, Minneapolis shooting suspect displayed a message "Hail Breivik. Hail Brenton."

Neo-Nazi Anders Breivik killed 77 in Norway in 2011. Brenton Tarrant killed 51 in shootings at 2 mosques in New Zealand in 2019.
