“Jamacha,” local pronunciation is “ham-uh-shaw”.
What’s the word where you’re from that, when pronounced exactly as it looks, identifies a tourist immediately?

I just realized that Jim Lee cribbed the WildC.A.T.s backstory from Transformers…
After some consideration, the most spectacularly inept villains in fictional history are the Decepticons.

They transform into into guns and fighter jets. They fight people who transform into the space-equivalent of VW Beetles.

They have been unsuccessfully waging this war for FIVE MILLION YEARS.

3) Please stop with the "the ALGORITHM" boogeyman bullshit. The Algorithm (tm) is a common scapegoat because it sounds big and scary. The Algorithm (tm) is "show people more stuff that's like what they clicked on/liked/watched/paid attention to".

Apparently I’m cynical enough to assume “halted for efficacy” meant “stopped development because it would prove unprofitable”…

It’s nice, sometimes, to have your cynicism disproven.

(see the next post in rah’s thread for the actual meaning)
We talked about this back when the first trial for lenacapavir first said the magic words everyone wants to hear, "halted for efficacy"(*), so a recap: this is not a vaccine or a treatment. It's PrEP aka "pre-exposure prophylaxis": you take the drug so if exposed to the virus, you will not catch it.
If you were alive in the 1980s, this is among the most wonderful & truly incredible things you have ever witnessed in your lifetime.

🧵 THREAD: A federal whistleblower just dropped one of the most disturbing cybersecurity disclosures I’ve ever read.

He's saying DOGE came in, data went out, and Russians started attempting logins with new valid DOGE passwords

Media's coverage wasn't detailed enough so I dug into his testimony:

If you think “algorithms” in social media are inherently bad, consider that the kind of stuff that people were seeing because of this bug is what everyone would see more of without the algorithms.
Oh no. Oh no, someone forgot the negation somewhere. Oh dear.

New: An "error" suddenly turned people's Reels feeds into neverending scrolls of murder, death, animal abuse, and violence.

Truly horrifying stuff, one of the worst things I've seen happen to random consumers of the internet.

If you see this, post a fictional artist/band you would go see live.

The Curfew, as described by William Gibson in the latter two books of his Blue Ant trilogy.

Explain your username:

In Elizabeth Bear’s novel “Grail”, she coins the term “sophipath”, refering to people that are pathologically incapable of accepting facts that are contrary to their accepted dogma.

I briefly considered what the opposite would be and started using it as my username.

Edene of Elizabeth Bear’s The Eternal Sky trilogy deals with an arguably more powerful ring of power and, ultimately, disposes of it herself.

This is a bit of a cheat, because Bear is rather obviously referencing Tolkien with that storyline, but I’ve decided that it counts nonetheless.
Hard mode: name a FEMALE non-LOTR character that could resist the One Ring.

I saw someone say Granny Weatherwax, but I have not read so I can’t be sure.

The only other woman I saw was Princess Leia and I’m sorry but that woman would be a dark emperor in a heartbeat & the galaxy would be well-run.

I would put two Melissa Caruso protagonists in that category:

Amalia Cornero from Swords & Fire has been trained her entire life to make well-reasoned decisions and throughout that trilogy consistently makes good decisions, even when they’re not easy.

Johnny Cash, in The Ballad of Ira Hayes, sung with utter contempt:

“They let him raise the flag and lower it,
Like you'd throw a dog a bone”
What’s a “line reading” in a song that destroys you as much as a passage in a book or a scene in a film. For me it’s Springsteen singing “and my clothes don’t fit me” on Streets Of Philadelphia*.

*Single lines only, please. Complete songs is a different matter.

“A lot of art is just falling on your face and then figuring out what to do next.

And that's one of those things where it's like, if you start out looking for perfection, the sooner you give up on that, the more likely you are to come up with something somebody hasn't already done.”

So, I thought of this thread when I was browsing Barbies…

It’s not perfect (the wheels aren’t cambered), but it’s got push bars, a low back, and no push-handles, so I think this is a representational win?

I don’t listen to enough radio to even know what would qualify. Ignoring that, my first choice would be Radney Foster’s “All That I Require” (which would certainly not qualify). It’s completely unsubtle, but who cares at this point?
