It doesn't matter how well my latest novel went down. My publisher has told me they don't want my new collection of short stories as they can't use short stories to bring my work to a broader audience. And you know what? Fuck sending them to another publisher. I'm putting them out myself.
The Publishing Industry: "Don't write short stories. They don't sell."

Me, holding a copy of Jhumpa Lahiri's debut short story collection, which went to number 1 on the New York Times bestseller list when she was 31 & barely known: "Yes, Publishing Industry, as usual, nothing you say is incorrect."

Every instance of "AI democratizes the arts, you're classist and ableist and a gatekeeper for trying to stop it" is a slap in the face to the literally centuries of poor, disabled people making art on the margins and a crass lie in service of a machine that strips down and regurgitates dreams

The Wright Museums Instagram page is HILARIOUS. Think The Office but it's the staff at a Museum for Black History. Better believe this is on my list of places to visit.

No joke: I got angry hate mail today for writing an obituary of a Black woman scientist—because the person felt she did didn’t deserve the recognition.

Which just makes me want to share it again: www.nature.com/articles/d41...
Gladys Mae West obituary: mathematician who pioneered GPS technology
She made key contributions to US cold-war science despite facing huge barriers as a Black woman.

Maybe we should all get a turn at being prime minister, like jury duty. In my 15 minutes as PM, I would give all queer people pride month off work as paid leave and ban the BBC from commissioning any more Mrs Brown’s Boys.

I’ve been posting observations online since 2011. Back in 2013, when I only had a few people reading them, an artist @400footghost.bsky.social read this one: A woman on the tube, her beautiful silver hair cascading in waves over her vivid red cape, nods to herself as she reads a book about tigers.🧵
