I'm just saying, I think you all underrated Alex Garland's Civil War in any number of ways.

Absolute indictment of our media that there isn't round the clock brow beat coverage of this insanity. They are absolutely capable of doing it but refuse to do so.
A Minnesota high school student was nabbed by ICE agents as she was trying to pick up food for her family after work. She was violently dragged from her car and lost her shoes. So, barefoot in the middle of winter, she was put into the back of an unmarked car in a small town (Willmar).

Yeah if Trump were just normal corrupt the Garland approach would’ve been fine but he is and was an active existential threat to the Republic and humanity itself so it was very much not fine at all
"Biden would never have ignored SCOTUS." Yeah that's the problem guys.

the one excuse/scenario here I think we need to permanently dispense with is the 'Trump's people rise up and overthrow the government' one, because we have now seen in both South Korea and Brasil that you can break these populist right wing cults if you nove decisively enough.
I think the problem is that there was never an appeals-proof case, and you could not leave the fate of the republic up to SCOTUS, so time was more important than people gave it credit for.
I think my biggest break from this site's zeitgeist is I earnestly believe that the United States Government spent 2021-2024 trying to build a case strong enough to survive appeals and see Donald Trump die in prison, or in the alternative force SCOTUS to break the Constitution declare Trump a king.

Even after Trump is gone, the world will remember that he threatened to forcibly seize the territory of a peaceful democratic ally, and our institutions failed to immediately remove him. That makes US dangerously unreliable, not just one senile gangster.
His not being impeached by the end of the business day as a result of this threat is as much a problem as the threat itself. It’s not just Trump that the world has to worry about, it’s a GOP that supports him and Democrats who suck their thumbs and refuse to even discuss pushing to remove him

I can't overstate my excitement for Life is Strange: Reunion! I *loved* Double Exposure, ranks just behind the original for me, so I'm thrilled we are getting the follow up so soon. So happy to be going back to Caledon. The Chloe return in the truck headlights was perfection!

"In the end, however, if senior officers—starting with the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the heads of each service—follow Trump down this dark road, the officers and enlisted people below them will likely obey the chain of command." #Greenland
American officers know what Trump is planning, and their minds will rebel at directives to take everything they’ve prepared to do for years and apply it backwards, against the allies they have trained to work with and protect.

Attacking an ally would be a perversion of everything the armed forces have been trained to do.

This is a sobering piece from Tom. The tension within the military of contemplating (and potentially launching) an attack on a NATO ally is significant. But as Tom writes, if Congress doesn't restrain Trump, and the Joint Chiefs don't reject such orders, soldiers will likely follow chain of command.

wild that austria thinks this is a good idea but ok
as a black comedy, someone should write a version of WWI leadup that has social media. Don't bother about incongruity of fitting 21st century social media tech into early 1900s. Just imagine what it would have been like

We gotta decouple "taking seriously the idea that Trump is going to try to end constitutional government in America" from "we're doomed and nothing matters"

Of course the latter is toxic, and only serves Trump. But the former is just obviously true

Rubicons being crossed all over the place at an hourly basis. Gestapo in the streets, concentration camps, openly white supremacist regime.

I fear it won't be long now until Trump attacks Greenland. Europe will denounce it but won't risk fighting. NATO ends. The US will have become the 4th Reich.

If the figures we're getting out of Iran are in the right league, this weekend was, I think, one of the bloodiest state crackdowns of all time. People are talking 12,000-20,000 dead; for comparison Hungary in 1956 was about 2,500, Tiananmen - across country, in multiple cities - probably 1000+

the last year has been one long exercise in finding out who has principles and who is a spineless worm fit only to wriggle in the dirt.
we have been way too tolerant of cowards: we should be demanding that far more people in power who claim to be against the murderous evil of MAGA meet the standard currently being demonstrated by Jerome Fucking Powell
Jerome Powell: "This is about whether the Fed will be able to continue to set interest rates based on evidence and economic conditions—or whether instead monetary policy will be directed by political pressure or intimidation."
