Since we're all (re-)connecting, a bit of an introduction perhaps?

I practice political phenomenology, study the histories that tie into that field, and esp Merleau-Ponty. Here's abook based on my dissertation; I also transcribed and edited his radio interviews.

Now that the White House is using AI to edit photos of their political opponents to create fascist propaganda I’m wondering if anyone could have seen this use of AI coming. Okay I’m hearing lots of people did and they were forced to watch corporations smother the masses with the technology anyways

Beautiful idea, beautiful thread
Last term I tried an experiment: I walked into my Tech and Design Ethics class, admitted that I had *no idea* what to do about ChatGPT - so I would let them figure it out.

As in: their first project was to decide and write the ChatGPT policy for the class.

Here's what happened:

They jam, they're difficult to handle, they run out of some of the inks, kids want them but don't use them, mostly they exist to show off. Yup, checks out.
Yeah this is a great analogy if you want your product to be viewed as a cumbersome novelty filled with features barely anyone uses.
yeah, just out of interest, how many people choose the pen on the right for real work or art? See a lot of them in professional workplaces, do you?

My philosophy brain just exploded. Can they even tell lying from bad faith anymore?
This paragraph is a doozy. Software, wiser than humans since 2026?

Such a great show of conviction from conservative Prime minister Carney to come out as a liberal version of an international relations realist. Especially as he seeks investment from Qatar and the Davos gang.

My take on AI is straightforward: the machine learning plagiarism industrial complex is not sentient. But the fish who have lived on earth continuously in one form or another for half a billion years & who are threatened by AI’s water consumption & climate change impacts are. I choose the fish. 🐟

This obsession with Trump. No analysis. The Files, dementia, none of that matters. There's been a giant fascist movement on the rise for decades. US society has been transformed to allow the current moment. Take out Trump, it still happens, no matter who wins on that giant stage before his 1st term.

I mean. I do have new friends.
When politicians say 'immigration is tearing communities apart' I always want to see examples of this and they can never ever provide me with any. Ever. It has no material impact on my life, not one single element is affected by immigration.
i could not give one single fuck about immigration and never have my entire life. to care, even in a ‘reasonable’ oh there should be proper checks and balances way is to be, rudely, the dumbest person alive. literally what difference is it to you
