In Parliament today I said the asylum announcement scrapes the bottom of the barrel and is a desperate attempt to copy Reform.

The radical measures are part of a much-publicised reform of the asylum system, billed by the government as "the most sweeping reforms in modern times", as Labour looks to see off the threat of Reform UK and Nigel Farage. But critics have hit out at the proposals, warning any move to alter how the UK interprets the rules will drive asylum seekers underground and leave them vulnerable to exploitation. Sile Reynolds, the head of asylum advocacy at Freedom from Torture, said the changes "will punish people who've already lost everything". Ms Reynolds, of Freedom from Torture, added: "Every day we see the trauma of people who have survived torture in countries like Syria, Eritrea and Sudan for standing up for the same freedoms we cherish in Britain. Instead of offering safety, political parties are locked in a race to the bottom - trying to outdo one another in cruelty towards refugees. "These proposals will punish people who've already lost everything, cutting them off from safety and hope. But either we all have human rights, or none of us do. Stripping away protections that prevent people being sent back to their torturers is not who we are as a country. This is a cynical attempt to scapegoat vulnerable people to win political points. We can and must do better."

This is flat out bollocks by the Home Secretary. Nobody is seeking asylum in UK for the joy of being crammed into an overcrowded and squalid hotel and forced to eat inedible food, which is the case for many hotels. The UK is not "generous" and it's not a prime destination for people seeking asylum.
Shabana Mahmood and Laura Kuenssberg. Kuenssberg asks for Mahmood for evidence that her plan will make a difference. She references when Mahmood called the UK a "golden ticket" for asylum seekers. But if you look at other countries, says Kuenssberg, Britain is "less generous". Mahmood argues that people are "advertising the generosity of our system in Britain" - such as asylum seekers being providing hotels and food. Criminals are selling packages to migrants in France - which she says is part of what is driving the problem. The home secretary says it is imperative that the UK sends a signal, and that it tackles organised crime. The UK must also deal with the "pull factors" driving the issue, she adds.

Deep breath, once more for those at the back, seeking asylum is not illegal. No matter route used, which considering Labour has closed pretty much all the last remaining alternatives means irregular ones.
Anti-immigration sentiments are stoked by politicians like Mahmood, not people seeking safety.
Next, Kuenssberg asks Mahmood if she believes she can actually push her proposals through Parliament, when there is opposition from some figures in her party. Mahmood says: "I really reject the idea that dealing with this problem is somehow engaging in far-right talking points". Illegal migration is "tearing our country apart" she adds. "I know that I have to persuade people... not just in Parliament but across the country" that these reforms will work, says Mahmood.
