Holy shit this is crazy. And the professor is right, how is this even attractive politically in what I'm told is our rugged-individualist country?
I know this is an obvious and old point, but it still shocks me how quickly the culture of the GOP has come to defined by the absurd personality type of the "toad-licking, ass kissing alpha." Amazing that they've built an audience that finds such deportment appealing, rather than disqualifying.

The perception that the US took the rule of law deadly seriously has been an investment magnet and a source of our country's wealth for many years. That perception is in rapid decline, and Canada is smart to position itself in the breach.
What is the difference between between investing in Canada and investing in the USA?
“We have rule of law.”

Yes, this is correct. And the reason is because our capitalist classes have decided that it is not sufficiently profitable, so they're not going to do it.

We must understand this reality. Capital *cannot* be relied upon to address the climate crisis.

look I know being an engaged citizen IS the work of democracy but it is also the work of elected officials not to create situations where everyone has to be mobilized all the time to prevent them from allowing some kind of Dickensian horror on a Sunday night while you're in between loads of laundry

Holy fuck. I understand that the NY Times needs to have conservative voices in its opinion pages, but my god they have announced that nothing is out of bounds.

🟢 It’s official: former Assemblyman Michael Blake is running for Congress in NY-15, challenging Rep. Ritchie Torres.

“I am ready to fight for you and lower your cost of living,” Blake writes, “while Ritchie fights for a genocide.”

I'm sorry, the United States senator is a "guardian" of what country?

I feel like there's one correct answer here, and if that answer isn't "the United States," then we have an issue.
Senate Democratic Minority Leader Schumer’s decision not to endorse Zohran Mamdani in the NYC mayoral race “was driven in large part…by his self-conception as a guardian of Israel, something he considers a core part of his personal and political identity.”

The robber barons of America are going to do everything they can to destroy Mamdani.

They will follow the SF playbook: they will run wedge campaigns, pay PR firms, manipulate social media, encourage cop work slowdowns then crow about crime, and run impeachment campaigns.

I’m Jewish. I lived in New York for a decade. I am very, very concerned about antisemitism.

I have no doubt that Zohran Mamdani would fight to protect my life and my rights. I have no doubt the ADL has entirely failed to protect me and my family from fascists.

I know where my allegiance lies.

I get the sense that many leading Democrats, in New York and elsewhere, don't really register the extent to which their brand of non-committal, finger-to-the-wind politics has fallen out of favor with voters.
Q: It's election day in NYC. Did you vote for Mamdani or Cuomo?

Schumer: "Look, I voted, and I look forward to working with the next mayor to help NYC."

Like, I honestly think that there were things in the de Blasio administration worth celebrating. The fact that stop and frisks declined by at least 90% while crime declined is something progressives should be proud about. But my god, he just doesn't get NYers. He honestly thinks he's adorable.
