This story was the first thing I looked at this morning, and it's one of the most wholesome things I've ever read. Kudos to the BBC for unearthing such a heartwarming story for Christmas day.

Even @channel4news.bsky.social opens its budget coverage by asking "What will this do for Labour's position in the polls?"

Polls are not even a good predictor of future elections. They're certainly not a test by which budgets should be measured.

We have to break their cold, dead grip on politics.

I have impression that many people deriding deal secretly hope it will fail so that they will be proved right; even though that means more death and destruction for Pal’ns. I agree with most of the comments about what “should” be. But, in imperfect world with only bad options, this is least bad.

fundamentally the problem is that if you think "hotels are where I stay on holiday and I like being on holiday so living in a hotel must be fun and it's not fair others get to do it and not me" then you have the intellectual reasoning of a little child and it's going to be hard to engage with you

This is a genuinely sick idea.

Allowing one "legal" refugee into the UK for every "illegal" one that's sent back to France.

Literally making one person's safe arrival dependent on another person risking death in the Channel.

Sick.

Are British politicians watching and paying attention!?
More than two thirds of New Yorkers are tenants. Andrew Cuomo compared them to hotel guests.

We need a Mayor who will bring our city together around an agenda to lower costs for everyone, whether they rent or own.

I think broadly speaking Jake Berry’s defection is still a net positive for Reform but I wonder when the point will come where accepting a shedload more of failed Tory politicians closely associated with the last 14 years will start to become less palatable.

Who the fuck do these lot think they are? And who the fuck do these lot think their *friends* are, if this is how they're carrying on?

From the very same paragraph in Orwell's essay: "England has got to be true to herself. She is not being true to herself while the refugees who have sought our shores are penned up in concentration camps, and company directors work out subtle schemes to dodge their Excess Profits Tax."
Peroration from Robert Jenrick’s speech at the Roger Scruton conference today:

“In the words of George Orwell, ‘nothing ever stands still. We must add to our heritage, or lose it. We must grow greater or grow less. We must go forward or backward.’ I say, let’s go forward.”

I was at a talk by astronomers on Friday & they were so excited about the first images from the Vera Rubin telescope, published today.

It's wonderful science, but I can't imagine it finding anything more wonderful than Earth, which we should appreciate far more!

Decent politicians need to push back against Farage's comments on Lucy Connelly.

"millions of mothers after Southport feeling exactly the same way"?

No.
Millions did NOT feel the need to call for mass murder of asylum seekers & we simply cannot allow the idea to be normalised.

The ultimate irony of halving net immigration numbers:

You can do it without reducing small boats crossings at all!!

This is Nigel Farage’s immigration doom-loop & Starmer is up to his neck in the death trap like the Tories before him 🤦‍♀️

Age UK’s research found 2 million elderly people are unable to meet care needs due to lack of staffing in the sector. Today’s announcement threatens any chance of filling this essential skills shortage, all to lean into a culture war against Farage. It’s nonsensical

Once you've reduced immigration, closed some universities, accepted Brexit is permanent and told everyone how patriotic you are - what then?

How are you growing the economy? Improving public services? Reducing poverty? Etc etc...

it'd be nice for one mainstream and prominent centrist/centre-left/left-wing party somewhere in the western world to actually try and consistently and vocally make the positive case for immigration for an entire term and see what happens - it may not work! but it'd be nice for one party to try it

Do we really need growth — and if so, of what?

Labour’s growth obsession ignores a key truth: we’ve already ‘arrived’ – instead of chasing more, it’s time to share prosperity fairly.

A big misconception about Greenland is that since it’s labeled a Danish colony, its residents are just a bunch of white dudes named Kristian—which is extremely harmful and inaccurate.

The population is 85% Indigenous! It belongs to the Kalaallit people, not to Denmark and CERTAINLY not to the U.S.
