This feels like an excuse to avoid regulation or discussions of whether any of the supposed benefits in any way justify the already well-documented harms from encouraging suicide to the environmental harm of data centres to the creation and spread of misinformation etc.
I understand why people are exhausted by AI hype, and why those of us squarely in the corner of "human dignity uber alles" see AI doomerism as self-serving hype, but I *really* think people on the left broadly need to start thinking seriously about the possibiltiy of the hype being...true.

This poor guy’s GFM has stalled out at 50%. I know things are rough right now and you’re probably supporting a ton of causes as it is, but I hate to see someone in such despair, and nobody should have to hope they’re popular enough to stay off the streets. Please help?
Former Star Trek RPG game developer Ross Isaacs is in dire straits. As he writes in his latest update:

"Things are bad. I need help. I owe a lot of money. I can't pay my electricity bill. I'll be out of electricity in two days. My cellphone bill is due in a week.

If you are geekily inclined, ReedPOP (whose parent company is named as having connections to ICE) is also the event organizer behind all the PAX shows, Star Wars Celebration, NYCC, Chicago Comicon, and Emerald City Comicon; read this thread to see what action you can take to voice your opposition.
Kinda feels important to know that ReedPOP's parent company has ties to ICE. There's some things we can do in the comics community to make our voices heard. 1/3

going to start referring to all this no-caffeine, omni-spectrum sobriety, celibacy, 996, workout and diet focus stuff as "mormonism with silicon valley characteristics" because it's more polite than calling it "homeschool mindset"

Reefer Madness 2.0 is a little alarming because it’s largely being bankrolled by the alcohol industry, but on the other hand they wouldn’t be doing it if they weren’t desperate

You can microdose this by watching the Penny segments from Pee Wee’s Playhouse
mamdani child podium gave me an idea:
we should have a monthly primetime network show where a random American child gets to address the entire nation for half an hour about whatever topic they want

Framing AI as liberatory is, I must say, evil, because what you are actually doing is selling a tool that is not only built on the stolen work of others but one that actively steals and stunts your own potential

You probably woke up this morning and thought "did I miss my chance to buy dash cams for folks in Minneapolis because we live in actual hell?" And the answer is no, no you did not.
Hey remember back when Russian dash cam videos were everywhere and it was a big sign that the state had basically collapsed and people had to record everything to be safe? Yeah, well guess what that's us now. Buy dash cams for MPLS. www.amazon.com/registries/g...

Had a slice after dinner and it’s pretty good! Needs a little something extra, maybe a lemon glaze, but it’s like a very light pound cake, moist but not so dense you’re tired of it three bites in. Going to try putting it in the toaster & then topping it w a small scoop of vanilla ice cream tomorrow
The angle makes it look flat as a brick but it’s a normal loaf cake shape in real life, promise. A little dark on the edges and you can see that the bottom didn’t want to release as nicely as the rest (parchment next time), but overall not too bad for a first try and it smells lovely
