While at Worldcon in Seattle in August, I saw a woman walk by wearing a gray T-shirt with just four words on it:

"I have friends everywhere."

It's something I'd been thinking about for a while. We—all—have friends everywhere. So let’s talk about THAT.

"I know the back-breaking and heart-rending effort [nurses] put forth every day. And I know that they deserve everything they are asking for in this contract dispute and much, much more. They are not coming from a place of greed or self-interest. If they were, they would find another job."
Hello, since you're here anyway, would you please take a moment to read and share this beautiful letter written by the husband of a palliative cancer patient (me) in support of the nurses of Kaiser Permanente?

It just makes me really happy that an Italian who hates fascism designed a whistle and opened the license for 100% unlimited use to distribute for free, and we're printing them with filament donated from all over the world & sending them across the country.

We really do have friends everywhere. 💓

I'm going to put this out there for Seattle-area folks: I have free prescription Hill's k/d dry and wet food cat food if you know anyone with a cat in stage 3-4 kidney disease. I also have a low-entry pellet litter box and two sets of plastic pet stairs for less-mobile pets. Feel free to share wide!

Hello friends! Just a reminder that ANYONE is welcome at my Saturday chats (see pinned post) and all ideas are welcome. Experts and clueless, old and young.

It's free; it's friendly. It's just a place to fight despair, get ideas of how to be builders and helpers, find power to make things better.

Pretty much all of what ICE does is unnecessary

We did it! It took us 3 ordinary people (freelance editors and writers) 5 days to collect enough small donations to cover rent for one month for one family in Minnesota.

$20 goes a long way when you're with friends!

In the first hour since I invited my circle of friends to donate, we've received 4 donations from people I know and one donation from someone I don't know.

this just making me almost cry today.

I do have friends everywhere. 😭
We are thankful for our friends everywhere
I just want everyone to know that the creator of one of our favorite whistles (the micro bitonal) is a very nice man in Italy who has been messaging me asking if there are things he can tweak in the next version he is designing mostly to help us mass produce these more efficiently to fight ICE.

You know one of the stories that has kind of blown my mind is Haven Watch. Some lady realized people who got released from the Whipple were just dumped outside with no phone or coat and decided she could do something about this, like a month ago.

But there are a ton of similar stories.
if everyone could take on the “what if we just did the thing instead of waiting for it to happen” energy that much of minneapolis has right now, the world could be pretty good

I don't have a big account here on Bluesky, but I do have circles of friends, family, and free-speech-loving colleagues here in Seattle — so I'm organizing among IRL friends to "adopt" a Minneapolis rent relief fund.

"Sure, ICE is bad, but we need to deport illegal immigrants"

No you don't.

If immigration enforcement leads to concentration camps and roving death squads, maybe it's time to just get rid of the concept of illegal immigration entirely. You've tried it, it's a bad idea in practice, so bin it.

This.
If you have a network with a decently large following, please consider adopting a Minneapolis family to pay their rent this month.

This is being done in a decentralized fashion because a lot of the groups getting $ are having their Venmo frozen and it's hard to send mutual aid.
tomorrow i would really like to challenge a few folks with larger followings than me to adopt a rent and raise it in one day.

my little group chat and my followers have paid like 70 families rents in the past four days. i believe that some of y’all could help us keep one family housed.

"We shouldn't need a specific court order to ask the [DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE] not to put somebody's life in danger."

Our Department of Justice. Is directly putting thousands of people's lives in danger. Every day.
Le's meltdown made this news, and brought eyes (including mine!) to the hearing, but we need to listen to the attorney for the actual victims here.

As she says, "people are just being treated like less than human."

"And we shouldn't need a court order saying Don't put someone's life in danger."

As a copyeditor myself (not in journalism), I applaud this reminder that "the work" requires respect for people as workers, across the ecosystem.
It's not, though. To do their best work, amazing reporters need not only stuff like health insurance, but also editors, fact-checkers, IT support, equipment, security and training in hostile environments, lawyers, brilliant colleagues of every stripe... losing that infrastructure is devastating.
