THREAD: Viral misinformation on US capture of Nicolas Maduro - 4 January

This video, shared by Alex Jones and others, falsely claims to show millions of Venezuelans in Caracas celebrating Maduro's capture.

In fact, it shows anti-Maduro protests in July 2024 over a highly disputed election.

the Soleimani strike never became popular and Americans largely said it made them feel less safe. I don’t doubt the numbers may tick up à la Iran because republicans will suddenly support it since trump went ahead and did it, I am predicting - own me if I’m wrong - that this operation is gonna…
I think public opinion will ultimately turn toward people being in favor of capturing Maduro, with regime change remaining unpopular. But Trump campaigned on 2 big things in 2024: (1) lower prices and (2) no more wars. He has broken both of those promises, & that will have political/electoral costs.

Excellent 🧵 (which further contains another excellent 🧵).

Highlighting this post, because it isolates an underrated micro-foundation for political dysfunction generally at the current stage of human social organization:

The resilience of oligarchy.
That Maduro survived massive political and economic pressure across the region, from left- and right-wing governments alike, as well as the courageous effort of a domestic political opposition in several rounds of fraudulent elections, further exacerbated Venezuelans' desperation.

(1/5) The Maduro regime is a criminal enterprise responsible for crimes against humanity, the systematic persecution of dissent, and the continued detention and abuse of thousands of political prisoners, whose basic rights are violated daily in Venezuela’s jails.

This is the kind of big thinking we need.

The Democratic world should be going through Supreme Court precedents. Here the key date is the 2000 GWB election, which @raskin.house.gov called effectively stolen — and the Court’s work after that the fruit of a poison tree.
Mayor Mamdani has nullified every executive order issued by Eric Adams after he struck his corrupt bargain with Trump to secure dismissal of the indictment against him.

Here’s that speech from Raskin.
Everyone should watch it.

And especially every scientist should watch it, given the posture of the Roberts Court on administrative law principles that create the foundation on which #NIH and NSF are built.

Much to ponder. So many questions. A real head scratcher. Thank you for your input, senator.
President Trump’s actions today with Venezuela raise more questions than answers. Is America going to be involved in running and stabilizing Venezuela? Today's actions raise many questions about the stability of the region and our policy towards South America.
