The best art is made for the self. It’s the very act of making art that itself is the gift to the world.
Make art that you think is fuckin sick as hell. Make the shit you never thought you could that you always wanted to see. Beat your insecurity to death and fight to become your own favorite artist.

Man it took me forever to land on the right hexmap distance scale. And I can't figure out whether the 11.5-degree off-kilter hex recursion is genius/elegant or infuriating (or both?).

That the triple scale up is 3 miles to 8 miles breaks my brain a bit.

I've said it often, but libraries are, without hyperbole, one of the greatest things humans have ever done. Like ever.
Hey, as a librarian I need to tell you:

Our funding depends on usage.

So go ahead and check out that book even if you don't think you'll finish it. No one will know. Check out that DVD even though you might not like it. Get ambitious in your quest for knowledge.

It sure seems like when we have our basic needs met, and don't have to hustle to survive, humans will almost always choose to create art.

And there is a lot of evidence that when a society decides to honor and promote art and artists, everyone who lives there is measurably happier.
I regularly see people wondering how it's possible that there are so many musicians and writers and film makers and artists from a tiny nation like Iceland.

And the answer is really simple: State funding for art education and artists. I literally get a salary from the government to write books.
I’m constantly astounded at the sheer level of artistic production coming out of Iceland. Novels, movies, music. Amazing.

In what way? Are there not enough jobs? Not enough space? Not enough money? I would like to hear one credible report of an American who is suffering because of migration. I have been around for almost 50 years and never heard one. Just uncritical parroting of xenophobic dogshit.

I’ve been sick with a sore throat and it really drives home the weird fact that half the time orange juice is the most delicious throat soothing liquid on the planet and the other half it’s weirdly tart and sour, there’s no telling which with any given glass.

This is your regular reminder that in the year 2000, Paul Rudd, with frosted tips, appeared in the Hong Kong film GEN-Y COPS as a bad guy (kinda). In the movie, he does martial arts, fights a robot, and, most shocking of all, does an entire scene in Cantonese.

Thinking about how these panicky leftist prison camp memes from 2020 were in fact deeply aspirational towards creating some form of prison state, and now literally the softest leftists I know have gone from "lolwhut" at this to "yeah Nurembergs absolutely need to happen" in a single year
Every single election it’s like, “if the Dems win they’re going to put us all in camps” and after several of these I’m just like “seems like you guys really just spend a lot of time fantasizing about camps”
