If you leave a Waymo’s door partially open the company has to pay a human $20 to come close it, please use this information responsibly.

"The Human's world ends soon," said the cat.

"Again?" said the dog.

"They are fond of endings and beginnings. Even if nothing changes."

The dog whined.

"Same procedure as last year?" said the cat.

"Please."

The cat lay on the dog's head and purred, muffling the fireworks.

I knew I was an outlier, but I didn't realize I was THIS MUCH of an outlier.
NEW: How many books did you read this year? If it was more than 2, congrats: you read more than the median American.

Read on for way more @today.yougov.com polling from me on America's book-reading habits in 2025. 1/

I wrote about @oliviawaite.com's lovely space detective series. This is the second book in the series, which is coming out later this Spring. You can go grab Book 1, Murder by Memory, while you wait!

Years and years ago at an AHA, a reporter at the Chronicle asked me what I'd like to see from them in the coming year and I said "Try to go a week without quoting a professor from an Ivy league school."

I am re-upping that request but I'd like to broaden the publications it applies to.

Finally finished The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World (2024) by Bettany Hughes. It was a good book; it did not deserve to sit on my 'still reading' shelf for over a year.
My one big end of year book tradition is that I try to spend the week between Xmas and NYE finishing the books that I started during the year but never got around to finishing. If I really don't want to finish them, I let myself abandon them. It's my little Book Jubilee.

because sometimes it's fun digging into our weird little cultural habits... I've been wondering why I kept running into dogs named Mochi in the Bay Area, so I asked about a dozen local pet owners why they chose that name! click thru for so many pet pix!! www.coyotemedia.org/why-we-cant-...
Why We Can't Stop Naming Our Pets After Japanese Rice Cakes
What's behind the Bay Area's collective interest in naming pets after Japanese food?

I wanted to get a video of this ghost crab but every time I got close to their hole they scuttled back in, so I tried getting clever with it. I made a little sandcastle and shoved my phone into it, hit record, and walked away. Crab was VERY suspicious of this addition to their environment.

This started as a hippo, became a cow, and now might be a cat? I’m not very good at faces.

I was at a museum (I think a Smithsonian) when Tea Leoni and Tim Daly were there. I passed them a couple of times.
Right folks. Feeling rather down at the moment so bringing back an oldie

If you think of "hiring in entry level positions" as "procuring labor to do the tasks entry level people do" then you probably do think AI is a magical headcount reduction machine.

But the point of hiring in entry level positions is to produce mid-career employees.

I follow a fair number of people, so I have made a smaller feed to make sure that I don't miss my friends and favorite posters. That's the feed I look at most. After that, I mostly just use following. I follow some special interest feeds (like one for History; Vancouver; Reading; medievalists).+
What feed do you look at most on here?

For all that people talk about wanting to avoid algorithmically-curated feeds, the (pareto) pattern of engagement I see seems to bely that.

My hunch is that most people spend most of their time on feeds like Popular With Friends or Discover.

I wonder how the computer chooses what books to put in the 'year in review' image. I am amused at the prominent placement of both "Copagnda" and "Floored: A Woman's Guide to Pelvic Floor Health." Also, of the 14 books in the image, FOUR are by @drewhayesnovels.bsky.social.
