Part of this week’s newsletter was inspired by the post below. Was there a way to show the distance between normal Americans and the super wealthy?

Today is #NationalPhilanthropyDay. Philanthropy isn’t only about the donations made but about the community created.

Every donation, large and small, helps us deliver fact-checked, paywall-free journalism to readers across Canada and beyond.

Thank you for being part of something bigger. ❤️

Ya ya, obviously this is partly due to the Atlantic being pretty mid so far this year, but man…the division is RIGHT THERE for the Sens’ taking if we can just tighten up the periodic sloppiness we still see. To be in this position so far without Brady is really encouraging.

While listening to the 1200 feed on my flight back home, I did a big enough fist pump at the 4-3 Stützle goal that I spilled my drink on the stranger sitting next to me.

I’m now walking back to Barrie from Regina…

In Vancouver for work for a couple of days. Hotel room actually carries the Sens game and the busker around the corner is playing “Mr. Brightside”.

I’ve never felt so welcome anywhere else.

instead of saying this was good strategy, maybe senate dems should say: "the republicans were going to kill people by starving them to death, and because we aren't monsters, we decided to let this fight go. We'll keep fighting. Stop electing monsters."

Here's a thread of some scattered thoughts about Jordan Spence, first star of last night's Ottawa win over Utah. He is a very good and very unusual player, which is to say: my favourite kind of player.

I’ve been as frustrated as anyone with the frequent lapses we’ve seen in the team’s play as of late, but it’s a testament to this team’s growth that they can be playing at a C+ level and still go 6-1-3. We no longer need everything to break our way to have success.
Ottawa beats Utah 4-2 with a strong performance.

Spence was magnificent, now has 7 points in 7 games.

Merilainen was outstanding. Wonder if he plays a bit more after that performance?

Sens are 6-1-3 in their last 10 games.

Ottawa is in a playoff spot without Tkachuk.

That was a really solid effort by the Sens on the back end of a back-to-back. Despite all the ways they’ve been out of sync, that third period was among their best of the season and they just continue to stockpile points. Bodes well for when they get back to the consistency they’re capable of.

Shutting down the government is a big deal. People have been hurt in big ways as a result of the decision. To have that suffering be for nothing—to re-open the government without actually having protected people’s health insurance and economic well-being—is unconscionable.

Sad news just now.
Lenny Wilkens, whose impact on the NBA as a player, coach and ambasssador was immense, died today.
In three years as the Raptors coach, he led team to its first playoff series win and was an integral part of the teams history.
Condolences to his family and those who loved him

Food insecurity continues to steadily rise in the US (and now impacts 1-in-6 Canadians) but don’t worry, it’s only because of intra-left narratives. The increasingly unsustainable lines at food banks are filled with people who have never been wealthier. Such a comforting thought…
if this seems wrong to you, the problem is not that there is some hidden thing in the statistics you can unskew and untangle. you are simply WRONG. you are wrong because you are in the grips of a powerful intra-left narrative about stagnation and affordability. it is false. reflect on implications
