“It’s a pretty delicate supply chain, so trying to figure out what it would look like to get additional infant formula to food banks to support families in the event of a widespread disruption to WIC is incredibly challenging."
A hunger cliff is days away. Women, children and food banks will feel it first.
Food banks will face logistical and financial challenges in providing the resources currently offered by the SNAP and WIC programs that are set to lose funding.

This. Food programs are already stretched too thin, even with SNAP. It is not sustainable- not even for a brief time.

I hate that this is necessary. And I hope Gov Kelly of Kansas is watching. Kansas’ food programs are already straining under growing need. It will not take much more to reach a breakpoint.
NEW: California Gov. Gavin Newsom just announced that he'll deploy the California National Guard and California Volunteers "on a humanitarian mission to support food banks as the federal government shutdown delays food benefits for millions of California families."

I lived with my dad when I was very young and he didn’t apply for food stamps or free school lunches, though we qualified.

So, I went hungry. It was awful. I begged neighbors for saltine crackers. I can say it was the worst time of my life.

Children shouldn’t go hungry. Restore SNAP benefits.

This is mind blowing. I don’t know how this is happening. I mean, I know. But how? What will it take for this to end?

I’d go one step further and say “I don’t care what any rich guy thinks.”
“No Kings” is great , but we really don't get a functioning democracy back until we internalize, bone deep, the instinctive response to this and every other statement like it: “I don’t care what that rich guy thinks.”

Make it your morning affirmation. Say it ten times at the top of every hour.

Kindness and courage can co-exist in leadership. Kindness does not equal weakness. The opposite is true. Kindness is strength personified. When you can be kind to others, you are displaying strength of character. Weak leaders make it all about themselves. Be a lighthouse in the storm.

In this clip, I cover the recent Philly experiment that finally tested housing vouchers against cash in a randomized controlled trial. The monthly basic income was almost 4x as effective at reducing homelessness in 18 months, dropping it by 67% compared to 19%.

1 in 4 vouchers weren't even usable.

We already know food insecurity is increasing as shown by the growing number of people using food programs. But this data is still important and will be a hope that cannot be filled in retrospect.

When children are starving to death, you do everything in your power to feed them.

It’s not complicated.

Ex-farm worker here.

We need to talk about this whole "But a living wage for farm workers would spike the cost of food!" thing.

Not true AT ALL.

Y'all don't understand how fast experienced farm workers are.

The average tomato picker pulls 650lbs per hour.

At $20/hr, that's $0.03/lb for labor.

1 in 5 Americans depends on Medicaid to access health care.
1 in 7 Americans depends on SNAP for their food security.

These cuts— all to funnel tax cuts to the wealthiest— will cause needless suffering & death, not just among the poor: when rural hospitals close (which they will), everyone loses.
