As someone who's an "AI skeptic" because I was in AI research before it was cool, I think people should learn about ELIZA, with the accompanying lesson that fooling a human in this way is very easy. Turing was brilliant but the Turing Test was not his best idea: We'll anthropomorphize anything!

One tangible problem with AI hype is that there is a degree of provocative hypothesis that is necessary in order for people to think a little differently about old problems.

But then the hype goes so far that it becomes detached from technical reality, and thus, disqualifies itself.

This is neat: there's a website that archives public meeting summaries and *pays* people to go to the meetings to take notes and upload them. (I think you have to do a training first. They pay $20/hour.)

This is an astonishingly good metaphor.
chatgpt is much like an improv comedy group

1) you are the audience, giving it prompts
2) it produces things roughly shaped like your prompt
3) it is trained to respond with Yes, And
4) it has the factual accuracy of improv
5) it does not understand comedy
This is fascinating: www.reddit.com/r/OpenAI/s/I...

Someone “worked on a book with ChatGPT” for weeks and then sought help on Reddit when they couldn’t download the file. Redditors helped them realized ChatGPT had just been roleplaying/lying and there was no file/book…

Waiting for the first startup success story like this:

“It was bleak. Our burn was $50K/mo: $25K salaries, $25K in tokens. Then we made a radical decision:

We cut our token spend to $0.

Everyone said it’s crazy. But we doubled runway, and gave us the time to do the pivot!”

Overheard someone trying to explain Menards to someone today

“Ok so they’re a home improvement store.”
“Like Home Depot?”
“Well sort of, but you can get everything you need to build a house. Oh and groceries.”
“Wait what?”
“Oh and they have a plant nursery. And they sell kayaks and model trains.”

Oh, I’m sorry. Did your rational and logical economic system not account for what if two terminally online men had a falling out?
