Was trying to describe YA outcast protagonists to a friend and we settled on three similar but importantly different types:

Underdogs, misfits, and hidden princes.

The stories they're in are almost indistinguishable—the hero starts weak and ends strong—but they satisfy a different fantasy... 🧵

For Euler's sake, "exponential" has a narrow and specific mathematical meaning! Stop using it to just say "goes up fast."*

Age verification? Watching the Ewoks movie on Betamax gave me nightmares.
Age verification? I had my phone card digits memorized so I could call my parents in college.
Age verification? I had a Hypercolor T-shirt.

The podcast audiobook you did is great because my local library didn't have any SfW books when I first got told about it 3-ish years ago (they have all 4 now) so it was a really low risk, easy access way to see if it would grab me. And boy, did it.

Recommendations from a trusted source, is the most powerful driver of book sales.

As an author, all I can do is try to get other people talking about my work. Nobody listens to me. Why should they? You listen to your friend who knows what you like.

I've made the hard decision to back out of DragonCon this year.

I want to be clear that this has nothing to do with the convention, and everything to do with the cleptocratic, authoritarian and imperialist actions of the government.

As a Canadian, I'm refusing to travel to the US.

If you watched the SuperBowl you saw a LOT OF GLP-1 commercials. A LOT.

Pharma companies are already testing drugs that go higher, further, faster. People lose up to a third of their body weight in less than a year.

It raises some important questions.
The next wave of GLP-1 drugs are coming—and they’re stronger than Wegovy and Zepbound
The upcoming drugs CagriSema and retatrutide target multiple gut hormones and could cause twice as much weight loss than current treatments. But experts wonder how much is too much

I asked my barber what's in fashion right now and she said that a lot of the young men are getting the "Alpaca."

That's not what it's called, but once you notice it, you'll see it everywhere and giggle endlessly.

This doesn't surprise me. The game didn't seem to know what it was. It sets itself up as absurdist capitalism vs absurdist communism, with whimsical characters all over... but then that whimsy is playing out in refugee camps and trenches strewn with bodies and the tonal whiplash is brutal.

Pondering middle-grade fantasy tropes, as one does, and started coming up with a tier list for how to get rid of adults.

Responsible and caring adults don't let kids have dangerous adventures, so we as writers need to get rid of them.

We have a toolbox, but not all tools are created equal 🧵

I did not know that.

Someone kept sending me what I thought was an ASCII art of a butt.

I have dubbed it the callipygian emoji.

Quote tweet with a Canadian book that would absolutely kill as a TV series.

It wouldn't be possible to do on a shoestring, but I'd love to see @stealingfromwizards.com's "Stealing From Wizards" as a Canadian fantasy-adventure series for kids who are fans of Percy Jackson.

@nataliezed.bsky.social's Hench would totally rule in about ten episodes. (With a sequel coming this year too.)

Can you
A) raise one eyebrow
B) raise the other eyebrow
C) Wiggle both ears
D) Wiggle ears independently
E) Roll tongue
F) flip tongue either or both ways
G) Flare nostrils (can anyone do one side at a time? I can't)

Something I haven't figured out is what to say when people are grumpy about me finishing the series. It's like a compliment and a complaint all in one and I don't know if I should be saying, "thank you," "sorry," or something else entirely.

Canadian instinct is "sorry."

Advice welcome.
