I think that advice is extremely short-sighted. Try harnessing anger at fossil billionaires after collaborating with and enabling them. Try telling people you'll protect public health after supporting policies that let fossil fuel companies poison the air and water in disadvantaged communities.

Coming back to climate, many self-styled "pragmatists" today counsel collaborating with fossil fuel companies. Making it easier for them to drill wells, build pipelines, fuel data centers. Paying them billions in tax credits for squirting CO2 underground to push up more oil.

This is such a damn good thread and the only thing I think I can add is that it is really whiplash-inducing to see how many formerly centre-left climate-aligned folks have in the past few months leapt to centre-right tech-aligned. Not sure if it's despair, stewing in Musk's X-swamp, or just honesty
One thing 2025 made clear: Durable progress on climate in the US will require structural reform to our corrupted political systems. Otherwise, steps forward will always be vulnerable to the bloody clawbacks we saw this year. A political strategy that doesn't center system reform is not "pragmatic."

One of my very few woo woo beliefs is that humans need to be able to see the night sky at least periodically to function properly and my evidence is that if I don’t go somewhere with dark skies at least every 4 months, I get really irritable and sad.
If you ever have the experience of seeing a night sky out in the deep countryside you can understand this; it really is a fundamentally different experience, and I can't imagine it not being formative to people.

The cultural works becoming public domain in 2026, from Betty Boop to Nancy Drew
The original Betty Boop, the first four Nancy Drew books and Greta Garbo's first talkie are among the many works from 1930 that will be free to use, share and remake starting on Jan. 1.

I'd believe this anecdote because I've met guys like this at conventions. People do ask (politely) about their work and they can't pitch it because what makes it special is that they are the specialest boy. They go to panels and hear queer and BIPOC writers talk about their work and think "ah ha". +
