Oh hi it's me your pal Panic.

Strident literary feminist. Publishing desk job. Ran one marathon one time.

"Worryingly erotic." "Disagreeable, quite shouty." "Alienating, dangerous, and perverse."

I'm about almost done and it really feels different than I thought it would. I was suspicious, thought "oh please don't ask me to care about some dude's awkward sexuality/relationships/masculinity crisis," especially given all we've been reading about men's sexuality in the past few days.

I was thinking about how for a long time social media made doing a thing about showing people that you are doing the thing and not about the thing at all. And therefore one spent less time enjoying the thing. Anyway, doing a thing later. I'll have fun probably.

I will instead tell you what's on my coffee table now: a collection of Arthur Machen newspaper pieces, which are sort of like if Andy Rooney was nostalgic for Dickensian London & three issues of the London Review of Books, all of which arrived at once because the postal strike.
alright let’s get something more pleasant going. what two books would you leave out on your coffee table so a reporter can mention you have them. doesn’t matter if you’ve read them. for me it’s Pale Fire (which I did read) and Ulysses (got like 15% of the way in)

Any conversation about return to office vs work from home that does not acknowledge the ongoing pandemic is ignorant, ableist and destined to miss the mark.
Many, including disabled people but not only disabled know they cannot risk getting COVID and offices haven’t taken steps to protect workers.

In defining rape in law and public discourse, Catharine MacKinnon wrote, "The level of acceptable force is adjudicated starting just above the level set by what is seen as normal male sexual behavior, including the normal level of force, rather than at the victim's, or women's, point of violation."

What the Epstein files show is the *solidarity* of many men-across class, race, religion, profession & party affiliation-in the global political project of keeping the boot on women's necks.

People have no problem understanding class solidarity among the rich. Why can't they see gender solidarity?
Like I dunno, maybe the reason it took a lady to break open the story of all the men protecting the dude trafficking underage girls is because the male journos were all emailing him making jokes about it?

But instead of being a disqualifying thing, for many people it's aspirational. And if they can't be the rich guy who rapes with impunity, by god they'll vote for that guy. 🤩

Again, I'm not being glib. I've said a million times the Access Hollywood tapes were actually helpful to him.
The Epstein story gets a something that is tearing at the heart of the electorate: elite impunity. The idea that wealthy and powerful people can do terrible things *at scale* and face no consequences for them. Whatever political party actually stops it could rule the country for a generation.

I wasn't being all Gen X wry and cynical about this by the way. I just think they are all completely rotten to the core. They actively campaign on shit like this. Culturally and politically. The deep rot of every institution. The ease with which they operated and diverted attention.
I'm just not sure that a population that thinks women should 1) be married to middle aged men at 14 2) stay in the home only 3) die from forced childbirth (to be replaced by another 14-yr old) really cares that much about Epstein.

There is no better argument for UBI than stopping the entire class of people whose only vocation is to slightly tweak the look and feel of Microsoft Office every three years to drive me absolutely around the bend for a least a month.

And it's something I've SKEETED (shudder) before, that I didn't believe that money couldn't buy you happiness. I figured that was a thing rich people told poor people to make them happy being poor. And then I saw how Elon Musk lives in the world and understood what that adage meant.
