Another really good example of David Seymour, without evidence, suggesting everybody is wrong about the RSB except him. This time, Treasury and MfE. Add them to the already extensive list of actual experts Seymour has dismissed.

So, you have to ask, is dropping a C-bomb always misogyny? And is this an example of abuse towards women in public office? Hm. I’m not convinced. See, what Vance actually said was that the price of overpaid female MPs “having it all”, is “being prepared to be a C-” to underpaid working women. She’s not saying Van Velden et al are C-bombs. She’s saying they’re acting like one. Why is that important? Well, the C-bomb is used so casually nowadays that it’s important to work out when it’s a deeply offensive word - and when it’s just a spicy way of expressing frustration. If you come up to me in the street and say, “Hey, Verity, you’re a filthy, stinking, rhymes-with-front,” I’d be offended. It’s clear you’re trying to evoke female genitalia in a vulgar manner and directly compare me to one. And I know what this feels like, because I’ve been a columnist since I was 18. I’ve had over a decade of people in my inbox calling me a fat, dumb, stinking C-bomb. And yeah, that’s gendered abuse of women in public roles. And yeah, it’s nasty. But I still think that’s very different from someone saying to me, “Hey Verity, why are you acting like such a bundt today?” Or, if I’m driving, and someone yells, “hurry the duck up, runt!” out the window at me. In that case, you’re just telling me to either pull my head in, or to drive a bit faster please. I myself would yell that out the window at least three or four times a day. Especially in peak hour traffic. I’m not thinking about anyone’s lady garden. I’m telling the Subaru that just cut in front of me that they’re being very annoying. It’s like saying someone’s a dick. I’m not actually referring to a man’s intimate regions. I’m just grumpy at you. Now, I’m not just quibbling over semantics here. In the last fifteen years or so, we’ve started dropping this word like it’s less of a C-bomb and more of a comma. So we need to understand the modern, everyday rules of using it because that’s how you define how offensive it now is. Which means we need to acknowledge the ways we now use this word. If you call me one directly, I’m offended. But if you say I’m acting like one, that’s you just telling me I’m being very annoying. Yes, I think we do have a big problem with the public abuse of women in power. But no, I don’t think you can conflate that issue with something that is, for many people, just a salty way of calling out someone’s behaviour. And let’s be honest, a lot of people use this word. Sit next to a tradie on the phone, or backstage in a kitchen, or with anyone who has a bit of blue in their collar, and you’ll hear the phrase “they’re a good punt” or a “they’re mad munt” or a “acting a bit shunt-y today.” Even more stereotypically middle class professions like journalists and CEOs say it. (I was once in a board meeting when an incredible female CEO congratulated me on “serving serious hunt!”) My point is, it’s not exactly scandalous in a lot of everyday circles. If you’re offended, you’re either older (fair call, times change and language with it) or you’re just very upper middle. (Welllll, tough. Upper middle class people do lots of things that piss everyone else off. If you can buy apartments you don’t live in within grammar school areas and wreck the school and housing system, everyone else is allowed to say naughty words.) So no, it’s not inherently misogynistic. It can be. But for a lot of everyday people, it’s just salty shorthand. I’ll concede it’s not a very nice thing to say to someone. But I don’t think people have a lot of very nice things to say about this government right now anyway.
