Lowkey my fav Assayas. Teen rebellion, Roxy Music, fire.
I just bought his memoir about being a teen circa May ’68, a few years before the era he depicts here.

American politics makes a lot more sense when you realize that the GOP is afraid of pissing off the GOP base, and the Dems are afraid of pissing off the GOP base, but neither party is afraid of pissing off the Dem base.

You know what early silent films definitely did better than anyone since? Guys in weird outfits hopping around. Can we bring that back? There's something sort of grotesque about it that is really interesting to watch.

The cheapest plan available to me (a Georgian) is over $1,000 a month. Healthcare is no longer an option for me. I will ration the medication I take for as long as I can and then I will wait to die.
So every freelancer you know is going to lose their insurance or be bankrupted by premiums because Schumer is an invertebrate

This is really good to see: Miki Sherrill just put out a statement sharply criticizing the Senate Dems' pending cave in the government shutdown, ripping it as "malpractice" and a betrayal of the people who are "counting on us to fight for them." Sherrill knows what drove her victory. Wake up, Dems.

This was the gist of my review. Explains a lot of Bruce songs, not just those on Nebraska.
"He [Doug] lived in the supposed heyday of American working-class prosperity... Despite all this, he suffered in the same ways--feeling undervalued, becoming angry, withdrawn, defeated--as so many men today."

I wrote about Ira Sachs' two-hander Peter Hujar's Day when it played at this year's New York Film Festival. Sachs appeared at the screening I attended, and cited Portrait of Jason and My Sister's Wedding as inspirations. It's very good, and opens on Friday at @siffnews.bsky.social Film Center.

The average SNAP benefit per month is $177 a person.
The average ACA benefit per month is up to $550 a person.
People want us to hold the line for a reason. This is not a matter of appealing to a base. It’s about people’s lives.
And working people want leaders whose word means something to them.

My family has been without half our income for 40 days. It has been.. very hard.
We are willing to feel that pain so people can have health care next year, or to undo these illegal recissions.
We are not willing to have been put through this for NOTHING.

Seisaku's Wife seen at #NYFF63 via Janus, which could mean a Criterion release. Arrow has done yeoman's work getting Masumura's work out there, but he still feels like an underdog relevant to his talent. The film is a female revenger with Ayako Wakao in peak form. Takahiro Tamura: also excellent.
