Always exciting when Law & Order welcomes a new cast member, not least since Reid Scott has been on his own for six episodes. Near as I can tell, Ajala is the first British actor in the detective spot (it's less unusual to find British actors, like Linus Roache and Hugh Dancy, as EADA).

Semi-fun fact: the one time I visited Vatican City, Pope Benedict XVI--the tiny speck in the second window from the right--was the guy. Not a fave, though I can say he blessed me, since he blessed everyone that day. That said, I was never Baptized, so...it was mostly just a nice day in the sun.

#LetterboxdFriday Last Eight Watched: Awards Season Edition. Grateful to Netflix for preview theatrical screenings; I've taken advantage of most. Despite Hugo erasure (and unnecessary Aster/Safdie Bros inclusion), I loved Mr. Scorsese. Pretty good week overall.

Unplanned double bill: Mary Bronstein's mumblecore-era Yeast with Greta Gerwig followed by Noah Baumbach's Fellini-goes-Netflix Jay Kelly with Greta Gerwig--who looks much the same even if the films have changed (FWIW, I took a pass on the Baumbach at NYFF, but Justin Chang is right about it).

Seisaku's Wife seen at #NYFF63 via Janus, which could mean a Criterion release. Arrow has done yeoman's work getting Masumura's work out there, but he still feels like an underdog relevant to his talent. The film is a female revenger with Ayako Wakao in peak form. Takahiro Tamura: also excellent.

Love that Scorsese quotes Michael Powell in Rebecca Miller's doc series.

#LetterboxdFriday Last Four Watched. So glad Cult Epics changed the His Motorbike cover art for their Blu-ray release. The art below kinda stinks, not least since Miiyo is, in some ways, the strongest character; she isn't some underdressed, passive acolyte.

Another image that may have generated a few clicks, though it didn't hurt that Film at Lincoln Center retweeted my review.

Pro tip: Finnish films from the 1960s offer a lot of sexy imagery.
