Not it’s intended purpose, but excellent use of alt-text here. Bravo, Dublin Inquirer team!
Dublin City Council moves towards deploying AI tools to “increase staff productivity”. If this will have any material impact on workers, or jobs, the council’s management will be held to account, says a representative for the union Fórsa. www.dublininquirer.c...

Grotesque.
The world’s first trillionaire initiated a move that has left more than half a million people dead, most of whom are children.

There’s an essay here on the role of good design/typography in successful campaigns!

It’s nice to wake up to positive news from America…
A sneak peek at the cover of next week’s issue, which celebrates Zohran Mamdani’s historic win. #NewYorkerCovers

A research question for #IrishStudies folks: where has a good run of the Freeman’s Journal, and will scan from the print issues rather than microform? Trying to order good digital images of exhibition photographs as the INA/BNA scans are awful.

Such sad news. Sr Stan was an iconic campaigner and activist. She did so much good in her life. RIP

Halloween in Ireland in 1832.

“Snap Apple Night, or All Hallow Eve”, by Daniel McAlise

In October 1832 Daniel Maclise attended a Halloween party in Blarney, Ireland and in 1833, exhibited painting at London’s Royal Academy of Arts, showing dancing, bobbing for apples, and other traditional games

I love that the librarian didn’t amend this, either. (I wouldn’t!)
Genuinely delighted to download a PhD thesis from a university repository where the author has neglected to remove the words "BITCH THIS IS YOUR THESIS" from the filename.

Interesting. A library decides they can’t renew a database because their users would immediately violate the license terms by using the university’s Microsoft products that have force fed copilot into everything.

Great future we’re building here in the higher ed factory

“An unfortunate waste of money and, more importantly, of time” could be Beckett’s own review of Life. 🤣
TFW you paid $1400 to see Beckett’s most famous work without knowing anything about it

Today is a day when arts degrees are worthless, but the product of those degrees is so valuable it would kill an entire industry if they were made to pay for it.

I doubt it’s the last we’ve seen of her: a nice wee platform now to line things up for the future 🫠
Looking very displeased that the grubby heathen hoi polloi stymied her immaculate ascension, but if she needs a tissue to dab away a perfect tear, I’m sure she’s got some in that €20K Hermes bag she’s got there

In “Against AI: Critical Refusal in the Library,” I examine LIS as in need of a values-realignment, asking readers to refuse the technosolutionism we are so often offered in place of human-centered possibilities, like taking racism, climate change, and labor rights seriously

This is a jaw-dropping statement from anyone in a uni leadership role — but also — what exactly is ‘low-quality’ and ‘hobbyist’ research? Nearly every academic I know is burning the candle at both ends and STILL producing important work in their fields. This feels like an anti-humanities dog whistle
