Hello followers! I write SFF, and am currently working on revising two novels at the moment, a Blade Runner meets Princess Mononoke SF, and post-apocalyptic gaslamp fantasy with romance. @bsfwriters.bsky.social has taught me almost everything I know and has great free resources for writers.
Sky Daddy also made me think of American Psycho, that’s the only other book that made me feel like I was going to have a mental health crisis from reading it lol.

Kate Folk on Writing a Contemporary Tribute to an American Classic
A first novel with a combination of heavyweight ambition, wry wit, and pathos, peppered with hilarious moments, Kate Folk’s Sky Daddy draws inspiration from Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick. Her e…

Look you just have to make the cool weird shit that excites you. You must. In this world besieged by bland, scrubbed boring, computer slop, you must. Make the thing you’re embarrassed to make, the thing that feels “too much” because otherwise we get drowned in a sea of cowardly work made by a button

I once asked a bookseller at a large indie store how many people would have to buy a book for it to get the attention of the store buyer and cause an additional order and they said: Three.
I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

This is a banger of a story. If you enjoy Carmen Maria Machado and/or Pemi Aguda's work, you'll probably dig this.
New story day! My twisted fairy tale, “Head of the Household,” is in the winter issue of F(r)iction.

Koschei the Deathless, Slavic folklore’s baddest bad, has met his match in Ira: a mortal woman with a clever plan to take him down. At stake? Ira’s best friend’s freedom. Warning: contains gluten 🥖🩸

I love this a billion.
In 2006 a high school English teacher asked students to write to a famous author & ask for advice.

KURT VONNEGUT - born 103yrs ago today - was the only one to respond.

His reply was a doozy.

Stop referring to our representatives and senators in congress as "leaders". We are not following them. They are asking us to allow them to represent our community's needs. They are there to speak for our causes. If they can't do that job effectively we need to fire them.

Moby Dick, The Great Gatsby and A Prayer for Owen Meany are all books about a season spent with an ill-fated "monomaniac". Trying to think if there are others like this, where the protagonist is really not the narrating character.
