252 million years ago, a mass extinction wiped out ~96% of marine species. Bivalves (e.g. clams) took over, but there’s little quantitative physiological data explaining why.

I got the chance to talk about the study below with Berly McCoy for @npr.org’s Short Wave!

When The Splinter in the Sky—a novel about imperialism and misogynoir—came out, one of the most common critiques of it was that the villains were outrageously cruel.

I did not put anything in that book that did not at one point happen in history.
the hardest part of writing politically charged fiction is that a good villain needs to be complex, cool and about as right as the protagonist; while evil people in real life are lame, cruel, childish morons motivated by greed or not wanting to look at minorities
