THE NIGHT BIRDS PREMEE MOHAMED The house was hot-not, I suspected, for my comfort, despite my famously thin and tropical blood, but for the little girl inside, who carried the winter around in her bones. Her foster carer drew me inside, a friendly blob behind my cold-frosted glasses. "Sorry I'm late," I said. "The roads are godawful-it's like we all forgot how to drive." "Well, it's been a while," Grace said, which was true; Calgary hadn't gotten major snow, the snow of my childhood, in decades. Even a few inches these days sent everybody sliding into the ditch. "Anyway, it's fine. She just got up." "What?" "She... has trouble sleeping at night." Grace's voice was carefully neutral. "She naps during the day." My glasses finally cleared, revealing the worry in her face. "Well," I said, "let's see how she's doing." The girl was sitting on her bed, the navy-blue blanket bunched and built up around her to form a kind of nest. Back to the wall, watching the door: it was sad how often you saw traumatized kids repeat the same actions, imprisoned in the atavistic desire to avoid a predator's ambush.

Three months until CABARET IN FLAMES hits the shelves! I've been posting more consistently on Instagram (including a snippet right now), but here are the ARCs of both the US and UK editions.
