Vancouver's 2026 draft budget has PASSED.

Approved on a 7-4 vote on party lines, with ABC in favour and councillors Fry/Bligh/Orr/Maloney opposed.

Property tax freeze, $50 million more for VPD, and cuts to Arts, Culture, Planning and Sustainability departments, among others.

Full story to come.

approved despite over 600 speakers signing up to speak to the budget, with all but a tiny number strongly opposed, and following a public engagement survey that found the majority of respondents supported a property tax increase to avoid cuts.

Today, despite hundreds of people speaking and thousands writing in opposition, Vancouver's Mayor and his ABC majority on council passed their "zero means zero" budget, which freezes property taxes for those fortunate enough to own homes at the expense of everyone else. 1/

It always astounds me when the men most upset about challenging traditional gender roles don’t know how to use a basic fucking tool. But as a lifelong Dave Portnoy loather, watching this has also filled me with a sense of overwhelming joy and amusement.

Ok folks we are back at it again from 1-5. Yesterday was a lot. Heard from so many passionate Vancouverites.

Unfortunately I heard the mayor say it was a waste of time. But I assure you, I’m listening.
Budget hearing continued after short recess. 157: environmental lawyer (?)Reads poem. 158: raised in east van. This is austerity and hasn’t been asked for. I’ve been lucky enough to use public services. Breaks my heart to think they won’t get same quality. Few people asked for this police budget.

Listening to Vancouver Council budget discussion in the background this morning. In response to a question from @seanorr.bsky.social about where they'll be retracting from the city just said they're planning to REMOVE baby changing tables and menstrual product dispensers to save costs. Shameful.

It’s Budget Day (days? week?!) at Vancouver City Council. Haven’t even gotten to the 600+ registered speakers yet 😅 Follow along with Councillor Orr:
Good morning. It’s budget day. I’m going to try and live skeet the proceedings so speakers know where we are at. First is staff presentation. 91 slides.

I seriously think the Jays are a great and timely model of healthy masculinity. Selfless devotion to the common good, positive affection (they hug a lot), not a lot of ego, and there's room to be hyper-competitive and possibly unhinged (Max Scherzer) without being toxic. They are good!
“The way that we see the #BlueJays being presented as a friendly, inclusive, cohesive unit, which is really lovely, is also speaking volumes on what's happening globally and politically in those two different countries, where we're not seeing that inclusivity.”
