there's a moment in PARADISE LOST where Satan arrives in Eden and realizes Hell isn't a place; it's a thing he carries within him and it'll follow him wherever he goes. and i think about that when i see these awful rich men whose monstrous wealth has enriched them not at all

My favourite mug that I use every day just split all the way down the side and across the bottom while I was filling it with tea. I am not OK.

I had a kid ask me in a school visit this week if I like writing and my answer was absolutely yes. Sure, it’s hard sometimes, but the act of creating is joyful and life-giving.
Sometimes I wonder if our many years of jokes about writers hating writing and doing anything but writing, etc, have convinced people that the writing part is the hurdle and the goal is just to have a thing in hand. But I am here to tell you: the writing is the best part. The act is the thing.

Considering that Rogers glitched out for a whole lot of us in the late innings of the biggest game of the year, this seems like a reasonable deal.
I think Rogers should celebrate the Jays by giving their subscribers a free month of service.
The Toronto #BlueJays gave us arguably the closest #WorldSeries in modern history, and the most fun and inspiring playoff run I can remember in any sport. I LOVE THAT TEAM, and 100% believe #TORONTO should have a HUGE CELEBRATION ANYWAY, to thank the team, fans, city and COUNTRY for a legendary run!

My 16-year-old decided weeks ago to have his birthday party tonight, so there are 6 extra boys in the house. We have a ton of candy and 10 pounds of chicken wings going in the oven soon. I just overheard one kid explaining Wins Against Replacement (WAR) to the others. We are ready for baseball.

I am not great at self-promo but it dawned on me today that LET THE MONSTER OUT is literally the perfect #middlegrade book for this season. Baseball, scary stuff, the value of teamwork, and a fearless upstart pitcher as the main character. What more could you want?

I seriously think the Jays are a great and timely model of healthy masculinity. Selfless devotion to the common good, positive affection (they hug a lot), not a lot of ego, and there's room to be hyper-competitive and possibly unhinged (Max Scherzer) without being toxic. They are good!
“The way that we see the #BlueJays being presented as a friendly, inclusive, cohesive unit, which is really lovely, is also speaking volumes on what's happening globally and politically in those two different countries, where we're not seeing that inclusivity.”

I really want the Jays to win in 6 just so they become the first team to win the World Series on Halloween and we get to enjoy a bunch of costumed fans in the pictures and replays for years to come.

I made the difficult but mature decision last night to go to bed with the game tied 4-4 in the 6th inning (which was 11:30 pm Atlantic! On a Monday night!) and wow am I glad I did. Tiny bit sorry I missed a classic; extremely not sorry I slept through three extra hours of pure stress.

I was last in Toronto for the Forest of Reading Festival in 2023. My kid and I flew in to Billy Bishop, over three days we did the book awards, a Blue Jays game, the aquarium and CN Tower, a couple of markets and the Eaton Centre, and we never once got in a vehicle. Downtown is so walkable.
day 2:
dodger stadium's 16,000-spot parking lot is so huge, it could fit ~10 more dodger stadiums in its place. a monument to socal's asphalt addiction more than to baseball.
meanwhile in toronto, an actual walkable, bustling city exists around the stadium

I watched the game on the exercise bike this morning and laughed out loud multiple times. If Wemby stays healthy, I don't think there's a ceiling on what he could do this year.
Whether you are into basketball or not
everyone should start their morning with this Wemby highlight video.
Nobody has ever done it like this. The whole video really challenges the limits of imagination.
But most importantly It Will Make You Feel Good!

All of this is the most foreseeable, avoidable, unnecessary disaster in sports in my lifetime. It’s ruining fandom, it’s harming players, it’s robbing bettors of everything they have, and it’s being not only allowed but *pushed* upon audiences by the leagues and their media partners.

Library holds are great because I routinely forget what I’ve ordered, and it’s like a little surprise party every time they come in. Kudos to past me for getting in line for the new Rebecca Stead! Also, shout out to the librarian who was rocking a George Springer jersey today #gojaysgo⚾️💙🇨🇦
