First reviews are out for The Vanished Ones! Reviewers have called it “thoughtful,” along with engaging, compelling, and action-filled! It’s out January 28 and available for preorder now. #mglit
Be careful on the sidewalks this morning, #Halisky. It’s just cold and misty enough that everything is slippery.

The Good Place and Friday Night Lights both ended really well. But FWIW, I thought the Stranger Things finale was fine! It had the usual Stranger Things issues (length, excessive talking), but the final scene in the basement was perfect.
Given that apparently the Stranger Things finale was meh (idk, didn't watch it, just the scuttlebutt) and we're not that far removed from the disastrous GOT finale that retroactively made everyone have never cared about the show:

What's the *best* ending to a show you've ever seen? Quote/reply etc

If you’re a real human being trying to get in touch with an author these days, introduce yourself, add a social media link immediately after the intro, don’t shower the author with compliments, mention money if you’re offering a paid gig, and include as many contact details as possible.
I’ve received three emails this week that are variations on “I love your books and want them to reach more readers,” and it’s increasingly hard to tell what’s sincere and what’s an AI-assisted attempt to rope authors into a marketing scheme. It’s so frustrating that this is where we’re at.

Yes, hockey players shower! Anyone who has been in a locker room after a game would never question why Ilya has regular showers. There is no funk like the funk of sweaty hockey gear.

Bless all the new-to-hockey fans of the show who have never smelled the inside of a hockey dressing room

Ever relevant, this poem by Mary Oliver, especially today.

Yeah that's an instant nope from me.

billy woods dropped a great solo album and a great Armand Hammer album in 2025. On Mercy he said “I’m old and slow but I can still get you 14 and 6 / a couple assists” and on Golliwog he rapped “money comes slow like publishing” and those are my 2 most relatable rap lyrics in this stage of my life

Hitching to the coattails of a political leader and insisting he should never be criticized because the other guy is worse is not a healthy response to authoritarianism. It's how you get more authoritarianism.

I don’t think that polarization is a “both sides are equally as bad” problem as it is sometimes framed, but I do think that Carney supporters who react to even the mildest criticism with this level of unhinged fury are absolutely a problem.

I don’t know what’s wrong with you to make you think it’s OK to talk that way to strangers online, but if your takeaway from the past decade is “maybe if we stay quiet and let him get away with it things will turn out fine this time,” it’s not my intelligence you should worry about.

Literally the opposite. If Canada can’t say that kidnapping a foreign leader just because you don’t like him is illegal, we’re setting a terrible precedent that won’t help us at all.

Perfect? It doesn’t even have the courage to name the US.

This is the correct answer.

The Chris Rock political satire Head of State (2003) was not great, but I regularly think about how the president’s over-the-top racist slogan in that movie — “God bless America, and no place else” — is now the standard public position of multiple US politicians and media outlets.
Incredible. CBS Evening News announces five new “simple values” — instead of their “38-page handbook” — as they roll out Tony Dokoupil is lead anchor.

One of those values is simply: “We love America and make no apologies for saying so.”

A lot of people should make it their New Year's Resolution to stop posting like "Did you know Twitter is bad? Here's a screencap of the worst tweet I saw today. Isn't this bad? Here's one more. No one should use that site. I'll post another screencap tomorrow so you how bad it is."
January 2, 2026 at 5:45 PM
Agreed but it would be great if we could at least convince people on this site to stop screencapping tweets and posting them here. We don't need or want to know what fresh evils are happening over there

The NYT is absolutely complicit in mainstreaming and normalizing anti-trans hysteria.

Thursday is the perfect day for Christmas (Boxing Day is Friday, natural four-day weekend) and the worst day for New Year’s Day, at least for those of us who didn’t book a vacation day tomorrow.

This entire story is wildly funny but this is where I lost it. I have been to churches with white people who tambourine on the 1s and 3s and it is an experience
Pastor Steve gone pass me a tamborine ... like i can tamborine on the 1's and 3's with the white people

Exactly. Or yet another “Will is danger and Joyce talks to Hopper about how parenting is hard” conversation.
December 29, 2025 at 2:43 PM
The Nancy-Jonathan “confession” scene captured what frustrates me about the show: I never felt like they were in real danger, so that scene dragged on forever. When the tension’s not there, so much of the heartfelt talks feel like padding.

Our holiday traditions have evolved as the kids get older, and one of our more recent additions is doing a murder mystery game together. We solved the case!
