My favourite mug that I use every day just split all the way down the side and across the bottom while I was filling it with tea. I am not OK.

Come find me at @afterwordsliterary.bsky.social Kids Day at Halifax Central Library for some fun monster activities. (I’m stretching my skill set here so please take a moment to appreciate my scary little guy)

I am not great at self-promo but it dawned on me today that LET THE MONSTER OUT is literally the perfect #middlegrade book for this season. Baseball, scary stuff, the value of teamwork, and a fearless upstart pitcher as the main character. What more could you want?

Library holds are great because I routinely forget what I’ve ordered, and it’s like a little surprise party every time they come in. Kudos to past me for getting in line for the new Rebecca Stead! Also, shout out to the librarian who was rocking a George Springer jersey today #gojaysgo⚾️💙🇨🇦

Prepping myself emotionally for tonight by rereading Hanif Abdurraqib’s incredible ode to Game 7s.

I still regularly get messages from readers who loved Thanks A Lot, Universe and say, “I can’t wait to read more Brian and Ezra!” That’s when I get to say, “You’re in luck, because I wrote a sequel.” And the even better news is that You Owe Me One, Universe is out in paperback on October 7!

This morning in Google Maps I accidentally discovered that the seniors’ complex in Millwood has been renamed the Ohio School of Rizz, complete with old-timey photo and 48 reviews referencing things like Quantum Rizz Mechanics. Kids are amazing.

My Short Story Summer continues. I grabbed this book from the library shelf based purely on the title, and the killer contributor lineup. My favourite story is “God’s Doorbell” by @naomialderman.bsky.social. I love a good use of first-person-plural narration.

I have returned to the forest and it was good (except for the hills, running uphill is still terrible)

I came across this once not far from my office and had to take a photo because it’s one of the worst cases I’ve ever seen. I had to squeeze past, but a person using a walker or a wheelchair couldn’t use this sidewalk.

A writing festival holding an AI workshop is terrible enough on principle, but I want to know if the robot wrote the blurb because I can’t decide if this is an absurd word salad or an invitation to join a cult.

I’m having myself a Short Story Summer and forgive me if I’m late to the party but @elizmccrack.bsky.social is a treasure. “The Irish Wedding”
had me howling.

Listen, Nova Scotia has incredible beaches, and we have our own wineries and distilleries. Come visit and you might not want to go back

They’re looking less juicy this year because it’s been so dry, but the backyard blackberries are surviving.

On my vacation we’ve gone swimming in the Northumberland Strait, the Bay of Fundy, and the South Shore; camped in three beautiful provincial parks; played a whole game of Hearts on a rainy morning in the Broad Cove Cafe and had a good time in seven different counties. I genuinely love this province.

Strawberries from River John, and cherries from the front yard. I love this time of year.

A couple years ago I reported this to 311 and no one ever did anything about it. The sign made it hard to access the button in a busy crosswalk right by Citadel Hill, and it would have been nearly impossible for anyone in a wheelchair to press the button.

The grocery store had mangoes on sale and we made mango ice cream and it rules.

If you like spooky Middle Grade, or know kids that like spooky MG, @maryaverling.bsky.social is a heck of a storyteller. I loved The Curse of Eelgrass Bog, and I could hardly put The Ghosts of Bitterfly Bay down this weekend. I can't wait to read what she writes next.
