"NOVELS AS FRIENDS IN NEED: Defences and Diversions

Reposting this since Bluesky has been weird today (probably something to do with Bluesky getting 16 trillion new folks last week) and because Kirby Kirby Jack Kirby.
Just posted an art blog-gallery with a look at Jack Kirby's original art for some of his "collage" pages. A really interesting technique, and looking at the original art (versus the poorly printed pages) gives me newfound appreciation!

My brother, @randytayler.bsky.social, has developed a way to migrate people's Twitter archives onto a web page that they can host themselves.

If you're looking to preserve your Twitter activity for posterity, ping Randy. I don't know his rates, but they're probably very reasonable.

One of the responses this thread (on the Bad Place) got, a few times, ran roughly "if magic is common, magicians become engineers" or variations of that theme - the assumption that magic would be rapidly systematized by fictional pre-modern societies.

And I don't think this is right. 1/

we fixed acid rain! we fixed the ozone layer! we beat polio! we’ve rescued scores of species from the brink of extinction! the despair many of us feel about climate change isn’t that it’s too big to fix. it’s that we know it is fixable but we’re being thwarted by greedy ghouls at every turn.
The other day I was like “you know something we heard a lot about as kids was acid rain, why don’t we hear about it anymore”

TURNS OUT we fixed it???

What does it mean that in a universe with Sun-Eaters and a planet where everyone is as powerful as Superman, it was an industrialist giving up all of his billions to ease Earth’s suffering that made me think “Well that’s just not realistic…”
