Just going to pin this to my feed as I think it nicely summarizes my niche.
That is one of the most grim observations I've read in some time. But perceptive...
In case you want to watch for yourself.
He gets confused after calling Greenland « a sheet of ice » and starts talking about acquiring *Iceland*.
He also issues a warning/threat that Canada only exists by the grace of the US, admonishing Carney to recall that the next time he makes a speech.

Donald Trump a les yeux sur l’arctique canadien. Il en parle de plus en plus souvent en privé depuis quelques semaines, selon NBC. Il souhaiterait une entente et plus de coopération militaire. A surveiller en 2026.
Trump's latest Western Hemisphere fixation: Canada
The president has intensified his criticism of Canada in private conversations with aides in recent weeks over what he sees as the country's vulnerability to U.S. adversaries in the Arctic.

Not just from Europe

The problem is assuming 1) the US would succeed & 2) local populations would be welcoming and show the US local ways

Recalling some NYT pieces on « what annexing Canada would mean for congressional races » 🤮
i feel like Americans don't get the level of eye-rolling this is getting from Europe

Pay attention 🇨🇦
Trump: "NATO has been telling Denmark, for 20 years, that “you have to get the Russian threat away from Greenland.” Unfortunately, Denmark has been unable to do anything about it. Now it is time, and it will be done!!! President Donald J. Trump"

This is mad king stuff, for real.
Breaking news: The U.S. will impose tariffs on countries that have sent troops to Greenland in recent days, President Trump said, dramatically escalating his effort to acquire the territory despite assertions that the Arctic island is not for sale.
Trump announces tariffs on European countries opposing Greenland takeover
The move escalates tensions between the U.S. and longtime allies that have been sending Trump a message that the territory of Denmark is not for sale.

This seems right (Trump likes Carney>Canada), + the quote is v unexpected (+ inconsistent with US Nat Sec Policy, position of USTR, US Ambo, ++).

Trump’s general disposition towards Carney (plus own plans for China visit/deal), may spare us from US retaliation for now, but durably?? Not sure.
Say what you will about Carney, but Trump seems to like him personally more than he likes Canada overall.

Trump: "it's a good thing for [Carney] to sign a trade deal—if you can get a deal with China you should do that"

In economics this is known as a Maralago improvement.
Sen. Kevin Cramer: "Maybe the point should be if you're the attorney for Jay Powell and you want to avoid an indictment, how about you go to Jeanine Pirro and say, 'I'll make a deal. I'll step down today if you drop the investigation today.' To me, that would be a win win for everybody."

A remarkable statement by a central banker. The implications are enormous.

“Public service sometimes requires standing firm in the face of threats.”

Powell‘s words are clear and chilling.

The Fed can’t defend itself from the White House. The Senate and the courts will have to step up. Will they?
"This is about whether the Fed will be able to continue to set interest rates based on evidence and economic conditions—or whether instead monetary policy will be directed by political pressure or intimidation."

Trump: "I'm a fan of Denmark too. They've been very nice to me. But the fact that they had a boat land there [Greenland] 500 years ago doesn't mean they own the land. I'm sure we had lots of boats go there also."

A draft framework Earlier this year, as it was becoming clearer that Trump might actually like to annex Canada (and Greenland), I made the above table to help me organize my own thinking and reading …

100% this.
But read the whole thread. Well worth your time.
One last thing: this invasion is an interesting coda to one specific Q1 2025 Trump-ism: “we don’t need their oil,” in reference to Canada.

Maybe they don’t.

Annex Canada, bomb Mexico ... the USMCA review this year may have some bumpy patches.
Trump on Sheinbaum: "The cartels are running Mexico. She's not running Mexico. We could be politically correct & nice and say, 'Oh, yes, she is.' No no. And I've asked her number times, 'Would you like us to take out the cartels?' ... something is gonna have to be done with Mexico."

Bootlegged in the sense of being broadcast & recorded up here in Canada. Us with our online streaming rules and broadcast licensing the USTR has called non-tariff barriers to trade.

I trust the Americans who have been happy to see the tape will be loudly defending Canada…
All of these bootlegged copies of the 60 Minutes segment flooding my feed (saying, ‘Watch it quick! Before it disappears!’) makes me feel like I’m in the Soviet Union and just got some black market foreign newspaper I need to hide under a floorboard in my house.

This is where America is now
