we could ask Boomers to pitch in more for the peace dividend they reaped for decades.

3) We avoided #Eurovision. But when someone brings this up re: #Budget2025, all I can think of is this weird & wonderful movie featuring 🇨🇦's Rachel McAdams & Will Ferrell www.imdb.com/title/tt8580...

but for those who already have lots of capital. The "tax efficiency" case made in the budget was weak sauce.

2) Who *should* be asked to make "sacrifices" in a "generational" budget? When the mean household net worth of seniors is $5.7M and 50% of seniors pay no net income tax, maybe...

So I asked AI (Chat GPT 5.0) to look at the published list of projects and map them against federal ridings and the sitting MPs for the riding. I hear the cool kids are using AI... It returned results for 13 out of 25 projects on the list. Here's what it found:

But, it's a little weird for a budget to name specific local projects, like a tennis court and walking path, or a wellness centre, or a memorial park... for a program that does not yet exist.

Also, let's be clear - these aren't exactly projects that matter to economic sovereignty & productivity.

Also, per the new definition, yachts are “capital investment”

yup.
Do you think they imagine a group of rich folks they think could be wooed by full expensing and tax cuts on boats, planes and multiple homes ?

If you were thinking of buying a boat or private plane, tomorrow will be a good day to go shopping....

Actually not how I read it at all. It’s renewing (improving??) a longstanding but under-used program that lets public servants go on assignment outside gov’t and lets outsiders come in to gov’t. Rules on COI apply, ++ We do need a more porous system to improve it. DODGE has a goal to cut/break.

It's a start. This will be limited to those without taxes owing and with simple tax situations. For more on what that might mean, see: crdcn.ca/publication/...

Having spent more than 6 years working on this file, this seems like important progress. Better than past efforts to be sure.

Back to "automatic filing", the ITA will be amended to allow deemed filing by the CRA for eligible taxpayers -- it seems to be the same 5.5M getting the pre-filled forms. I *hope* this means that if you get a form and do nothing, your return is filed. Huzzah!
The principle is a good one.

doesn't add additional admin burden (ie: no show us your receipts for the fee, provide MD license, etc..). And they are reaffirming the ITA amendment to ensure CDB is not taxable. As I yelled at the sky at the time, that was one part of the Fall 2024 update worth saving.

On which, in lieu of vouchers to pay for MD fees to get the DTC form filled out, this budget proposes a top up $150 (1 time) to offset application costs. That's probably easier than the promised system to pay MDs or repay applicants for MD fees. I like that this is a not terrible estimate of fees...

The budget doesn't mention the Canada Disability Benefit, in contrast to the PM's announcement back in October. I got excited about the CDB being on the list, but I think that may have been a comms error. Absent major changes to the program, auto-enrolment isn't currently possible.
