Archaeology, banjos, Taitokerau, preschoolers and teens, lack of executive function, second chances, mental exhaustion, well-toasted bread, banjos. Not the real-life Indiana Jones, more a dwarfish sort of Evelyn O'Connell
Pinned
Hi to new followers. I am Jono, a 48 year old consultant archaeologist/para-historian in Taitokerau, northern Aotearoa-New Zealand. Once divorced father of three boys 17, 13, 4, partner to Dr Marine Biologist who is now retraining in MRI. Owns four banjos. Lives by the beach. Grumpy old socialist.
Officer D, the one good police apple in a barrell full of shitworms.

Reminded every time I am in Dargaville what an amazing little time capsule of AoNZ architecture it is. Streets and streets of simple four room cottages, bay and double bay villas, Cali bungalows and art deco houses, and some nice commercial buildings too.

Knock knock?

Hu's there?

But seriously. When doing the last of your moving and cleaning at night in Taitokerau, dont leave your truck door open with the engine on because your phone is flat...You get a lot of hop-ons.

Just absolutely squandering that new mortgage lending cashback.

In Mitre10 and delighted by I Make Hamburgers playing on the PA.

Awesome. Always up for The Whitlams.

So. Tuam.

Full acknowledgment of Ireland's ongoing historical-political-religious trauma reckoning, but is it likely there are anywhere near 800 missing mothers and babies in a septic tank?

Have read news reports, the recent progress updates, skimmed the main ODAIT reports but seems a bit murky

New band name just dropped

Dork Psyche
it’s important to understand that Nate Silver’s entire consciousness is filtered through the lens of being a gross nerd his entire life. the opportunity to feel like he’s one of the cool kids is something he can’t pass up, it’s load-bearing for his dork psyche.
the hipsters, they’re ordering double frufru mocha soy frappuccino. doesn’t anybody order a black coffee anymore

ATTENTION: for people new to my garbage (and for some who are very familiar with said garbage), I have an ongoing document of all things dark and morbid in and around Los Angeles - approaching almost 170 spots and possibly hitting 200 - check it out if you’re into that I HAVE SPOKEN
A LOS ANGELES MORBID LOCATION THREAD:

1. first we have the Highland Gardens Hotel, which used to be the Landmark Motor Hotel; this was where Janis Joplin died of a heroin overdose in Room 105 while she recorded her final album Pearl in 1970

So much slightly belated clarity but also the perfect use if "glad-hearted" for Mamdani and his campaign. Described in a nutshell and what we should all be aiming for, in endeavours both small and large.

Ran into Brad Olsen's dad at the shop. Good guy. Was my landlord more than a decade ago and always says hi when we bump into each other outside the shop every year or two.

Salt of the earth. Civil works guy.

Brad was always going somewhere, and never looked back.

New Mexico always felt very familiar to me, culturally. More so than anywhere else in the US I have visited (except Hawaii obvs).
While I’m on the topic, I was in Albuquerque a few weeks ago and their bus only lanes are in the center. They have incorporated Native American and SW art into their designs, even on the hwys. It’s beautiful.

We can do that here. Let’s imagine it then let’s do it.

Every so often I feel like maybe a need to take a break from this again.

But then the vibe becomes exquisite and the lols flow and someone shows me something I had never seen before that's super cool or says something that hits my core.

There is aroha here.

So I take my finger off the button.

Librarians also tend to be protectors of a set of anti-capitalist, anti-corporatist, equality-based values embedded into local government.

Every book checked out is a book or e-book not sold, for starters. But it's also the idea that gov't providing for the people, that sharing, is a good thing.

One for us to use next year AoNZ peeps?
And do I see these ads from the Democrats? Just 30 seconds of “Australia has so much power it’s free. We sent men to the moon. Why can’t we have that?” The dark key to every human heart is “feeling hard done by”, the GOP has known that for years, fucking turn it,
