I wonder if the US Fire Administration has ever considered just building software for fire departments itself? What do departments abroad use? www.nytimes.com/2025/12/14/u... (🎁🔗)

FAIR plan’s current liability is greater than the entirety of CA’s annual budget and it’s only a fraction of CA’s property owners. The insurance industry would have to backstop this weee the FAIR plan to go bankrupt, which is both likely and impossible. Jane Kim wants to increase public exposure.

This is what passes for progressivism and climate policy in California. Jane Kim’s answer for elevated fire risk and actuarial risk? Put it on the public dime. Urban renters should bail out well to do exurban property owners and landlords in fire zones. FAIR plan is already a ticking time bomb!

There simply is not enough public money or insurance industry regulation that can cover California’s growing climate risk. It is a serious problem that Insurance Commissioner candidates and state legislators prefer driving us off the cliff as opposed to honestly assessing reality.

One of my (unpopular) cannabis takes is that California isn't going to be the eventual "leader in cannabis" for reasons related to this thread

Hey folks! We've got a new batch of Verge articles that are completely free to read for the day.

First up is @cameronfaulkner.bsky.social's review of a a surprisingly affordable 5K monitor:
I tested a 5K monitor that’s over $1,000 less than Apple’s Studio Display: It’s good enough
It’s a good value, but far from the best 5K model out there.

you can tell JD’s been stewing in Euro/UK/Canada immigration discourse too much because no American’s primary complaint about undocumented immigrants is that they contribute too little to housing supply. You hear it more in countries with more public housing & fewer immigrants in construction

Rob Reiner was one of the key people behind the effort to go to court to overturn California's anti-marriage equality Proposition 8 when it passed in 2008.

Working with Chad Griffin, they founded the American Foundation for Equal Rights and got Ted Olson and David Boies to team up to fight Prop 8.
