One of the best things about being a slow learner is that there are so many opportunities to notice things that you never noticed before. There's a full moon and snow and the night sky is deep blue, not black. Is that widely known?

This needs to be a prominent part of every D candidate's platform for 2026, no mumbling. Rip that shit out root and branch on Day 1, all of it.
every opposition politician needs to take notes and run on undoing the bullshit on day 1

Interesting topic but the thread is too long, so I'll just start my own. I can think of lots:
Moby Dick
The Wind in the Willows
Archy and Mehitabel
The Origin of Species, Beagle, Descent of Man, etc. (Darwin is a really good and inspiring writer, you can see his mind working)

Ok, everyone, what book is sacred enough to you to get sworn in on?
Strange takes on Mayor Zamdani swearing his oath on the Qu’ran. It has nothing to do with church & state. The point of the oath is for the person swearing in to do so upon some text that is sacred TO THEM. Some Presidents swore in w/o any book. John Quincy Adams was sworn on a law book. His choice.

I've lived a long time and I've been disappointed by a lot of politicians, but I dunno, I don't think he is going to disappoint us. He always talks about the right things.

I call bullshit, this is fake, but if I report it what's the argument to the mods that it should be taken down? How do you/I/we convince someone who doesn't already understand what's wrong with lying?

This is…a lot. From the AI cover art (c’mon SWJ, wtf) to the grasping at straws to connect Clausewitz (c’mon dude, not everything is dead Prussian) to a core misunderstanding of Posse Comitatus and the context of US hemispheric military action. Oy vey.

I really should get some new Christmas Tree ornaments for next year, some of the ones I have are outright dowdy. I'm just talking about your basic shiny colored glass balls. Where are the after-Christmas sales on these? And are there different levels of quality, and if so which are the good ones?

I would prefer that my country not violate international law, but aside from that I just feel sorry for any professional spooks who are still at the CIA who have to disclose this kind of information to the 8-year-olds who run this administration. Blabbermouths with no comprehension of "covert."

Useful information for people trying to choose books for young people. Draw your own conclusions, I don't know how to do it either.
America, there's something you should know.

The top three kinds of books that young people (under 25) offer to sell me on Dec. 26 are:

- "Chicken Soup for the _____"

- "Oh, the Places You'll Go"

- Books of New Yorker cartoons

I'm just saying. Keep it in mind for graduations and birthdays, too.

Here we have a good example of why we need a Government. Just our luck that right now the Administration has no interest in, no understanding of, and no intention of governing, but people should keep or start talking about how there are problems here that we grown-ups need to take seriously.
Maybe society should put up guardrails around the suicide whisperer, I’m saying. Maybe we _don’t_ need the self-annihilation intelligent assistant chatbot.

This is a very good read. E.g.: "This administration is trying not simply to efface and distort a past, but to blot out a future, to put an end to innovation, knowledge, art, safety, things from which they too would surely benefit." There is more in that vein.
From earlier this year, when the damage was only a couple of months in, but even more relevant now.

Really one of the biggest mistakes in the Harris/Walz campaign was the decision to stop using the word "weird". It is past time to bring that back.
