Talking to @cmcluck.bsky.social the other day: part of writing software is understanding the problem you are trying to solve. Even if code is instant and free it is almost certainly wrong until you understand what you are trying to do.

It’s the journey…

Holy shit. This guy saved a PNG to a bird.

(he drew a bird into a spectrogram, played that sound to a starling, and the starling reproduced it back to him with enough accuracy he got his bird drawing back in their call's spectrogram) www.youtube.com/watch?v=hCQC...

You’re not really a software engineer until you’ve failed to write working sync code.

Happy b’day “When Doves Cry” — released 41 yrs ago today.

On his last night of mixing, Prince started removing instrument tracks, said engineer Peggy McCreary. “The last thing he did was he punched that bass out. He smiled at me and said, ‘Ain’t nobody gonna believe I’d do this.’ And he did.” 🕊️

Don't count your quiet engineers out. I have a quiet engineer that always does a great job getting their work done, but through talking to people in & outside of my team, I've learned they do waaaay more work than I ever realized. Quiet storm 💜

Quiet people, don't be afraid to talk about your work!

Hey, so it turns out that paper on black plastic was a bit blown out of proportion by a simple math error.

Remember, kids: most hippies were awful people pretending to be nice and most punks were nice people pretending to be awful
Early punk was so great cos the media were like "this sonic apocalypse is waiting to consume your child with Drugs and Violence" and then you hear it and it's a dude with an asymmetric haircut playing a 10% tuffer version of Cheap Trick while drinking exactly three beers

Capitalism will have you taking one of the best, most useful indexing systems ever invented, then slowly infusing it with raw sewage for years before smashing it into a fine powder w/ a hammer & blowing the broken sewagey dust into everyone's eyes, all because you thought a might get an extra dollar

"The basic problem with the conservative discourse around “parents’ rights” is that it frames children as chattel—that is, as parents’ property. But children aren’t property. They’re people. And as people, they enjoy the same fundamental human rights as anyone else."
There's no such thing as 'parents' rights'
Parents have a right to raise their children in accordance with their own values, but they don't have the right to override their children’s own rights.

Reposting this from a reply so more people see it. If you're doing any work inside a wall, grab the tape measure and your phone and photograph EVERYTHING with references: studs, plumbing, electric, etc. You may never need it, but if you do, it will save you thousands of dollars someday.
The one thing I recommend people do whenever they're doing construction that opens a wall is take detailed pics with measurement references of all the insides for that very reason! It has saved our butts so many times.
