Happy Birthday, Irene Sharaff. From stage to screen, she shaped characters through clothing and showed the world that true style is a rare and deliberate art.

I came to Minneapolis to report on what's going on, and one of the main questions I showed up with is "just what is the scale of the resistance?" After all, we're all used to the news calling Portland a "war zone" or whatever when it's just some protests in one part of town.

Balenciaga shares a birthday with Dior as well & what better excuse to share a favourite, Vilmorin from 1952. The graduated daisy embroidery, more dense at the waist & trailing away towards the hem, stitched by artisans at Rebé makes it a beautiful collaboration @metmuseum.org #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡

With every one of Trump's big, aggressive moves it's a question of whether we're gonna get TACO Trump or Jan 6 Trump and the answer lies in how much resistance he faces.
Trump: "Based upon a very productive meeting I had with Mark Rutte, we have formed the framework of a future deal with respect to Greenland and, in fact, the entire Arctic Region. This solution, if consummated, will be a great one... Based upon this understanding, I will not be imposing the Tariffs"

Now what?

There's been a lot of talk about Iceland today, apparently due to something That Man said. I missed it though, so can someone fill in the gap?

We are now 366 days into Trump "ending the war in Ukraine within 24 hours".

We are also 1,427 days into Putin's "3-day special operation".

Turns out tyrannical narcissists are full of shit.

In other words, bullies aren't dissuaded by appeasement, but by pushback.
Some Europeans will be reassured by this, and wind down the (cautious) assertiveness of recent days.

But it shows that displays of European resolve move Trump in ways that the misguided sycophancy of previous 12 months never did. It's a reason to press forward, not pull back.
Trump on NATO: "We never ask for anything, and we never got anything. We probably won't get anything unless I decide to use excessive strength and force, where we would be frankly unstoppable. But I won't do that. Okay?"

It's Trump so you can never be sure but I think the tariff tantrum was because he was told he can't use force.

Why threaten tariffs in the summer if you're about to invade?
Attn news commentators: Trump saying he could use force to obtain Greenland but won’t is not Trump saying he won’t use force to obtain Greenland. It is Trump using force as a threat to obtain Greenland. That is why he mentions it.

While it's a joke, That Man is so far off the rails that doing this might, incredibly, actually work. He seems to react to windmills the way vampires are said to react to garlic.
Mark Carney's speech is now only the second most acute analysis of where the world is at right now:

Remembering Moira Shearer on her birthday 🎂
📷 Kenn Duncan
NYPL digital collection, 1984

Duncan's Red Shoes project included shots of Twiggy, Mary Tyler Moore, Milo O'Shea, Gregory Hines & more, wearing - you guessed it - red shoes. The best, I think, was the original: Moira Shearer.

Since That Man is now dropping below 40% approval (37% was the most recently cited figure), I decided to check something, and lo and behold, he's now in Jimmy Carter territory: news.gallup.com/opinion/gall...
Jimmy Carter Retrospective
Jimmy Carter averaged 45.5% job approval as president, essentially tied with Harry Truman as the second-lowest among post-World War II presidents.

And at some point "turning up the heat" will stop working, because a critical mass of people - never mind the doomers - will push back on him.
Trump is trying to be a demagogue populist when he doesn’t have popular support. It won’t work. So he’ll just keep turning up the heat.

Nuanced take: I think it's really important to give *normal citizens* who supported Trump and off-ramp and *professional writers, pundits and politicians* who supported Trump should have to wear it like a scarlet letter for the rest of their lives
This is aggravating, because on the one hand I think it's really important to give fascists an off-ramp and positive reinforcement when they use it...

...on the other hand, FUCK that guy, in particular.

Anecdotally I am hearing from a lot of people that Trump supporters they know have gotten real quiet or outright admitted they made a mistake. Despite very loud online assholes, a lot of people did NOT vote for what's happening right now
Trump reaching new lows: only 37% approval & 71% of adults say the country is out of control.

-27 points underwater on inflation
-10 points underwater on immigration
-7 points underwater on handling crime

Plus, only 9% support using military force to seize Greenland.
