In the pre-industrial world, ppl didn’t sleep in 1 stretch but in 2 phases: 1st sleep & 2nd sleep. Between these, they stayed awake for an hour or two, praying, reading, quietly reflecting. This older form of biphasic sleep was not a insomnia but a natural way of living.
