I've said it before and I'll say it again, I think Anne is the absolutely indispensable writer on American and global democracy issues in this fraught age. I'm glad she is going strong here on BS, over 400,000 followers!

No serious country would recognize it, NATO would collapse, the EU would impose sanctions, and it would further embolden Russia and China.

What would a U.S. occupation of Greenland look like?

Presumably it would be met with outrage but little to no actual armed opposition. Would Trump just buy off the 30,000 residents? Offer them a million apiece? Chump change for Greenland, right?

This freak is completely unhinged. Just take a listen.

I’m really embarrassed for my country right now.
MILLER: The US is using its military to secure our interests unapologetically in our hemisphere. We're a superpower. It's absurd we'd allow a nation in our backyard to become a supplier of resources to our adversaries

TAPPER: Sovereign countries shouldn't be able to do what they want?

Unfortunate but understandable.
I’m going to be taking a break from Bluesky for a while.

There’s a lot of good here but increasingly this place just makes me sad and angry and, increasingly, foul tempered and mean. It’s not good for me or anyone else.

I’ll check DMs occasionally but otherwise I’ll be away for a bit. Take care.

This guy reminds me of the most arrogant and condescending opposing counsel I’ve dealt with.
Uniformly despised.
Toasts all ‘round when they eventually (and inevitably) get their comeuppance.
Such people can have a lot of things but they can never have the one thing they most crave: respect.
Stephen Miller: "What the president said is true. The United States of America is running Venezuela ... by definition we are in charge because we have the US military stationed outside the country. We set the terms and conditions ... for them to do commerce, they need our permission."

A great thread from my friend.
A lot of Americans who identify as Christians see themselves as a modern-day equivalent of Israel during Biblical times. Chosen by God. Anointed. Blessed.

Even as many have indulged in heresies such as Christian Nationalism and bought into racist lies like the Great Replacement Theory.

Well …

NYT:

At least 40 people were killed in the US attack on Venezuela, including military personnel and civilians.

“We” are now running Venezuela.
Trump on Venezuela: "We're going to run the country until such time as we can do a safe, proper, and judicious transition"

It is a game to the draft dodger.
Trump posts footage of the Maduro raid set to "Fortunate Son" -- a protest song about the Vietnam War draft

I don’t mean to be crude but this psychopath gets off on violence.

Which is why I have a sinking feeling in my gut that if the American people ever become outraged enough to engage in mass protest in D.C., we will see significant violence against protesters.
Trump to Fox & Friends on the raid that captured Maduro: "I mean, I watched it literally l like I was watching a television show. If you would've seen the speed, the violence -- it was an amazing thing."

“Kinetic action” is the new euphemism for “killing people”. People who may have just been going about their jobs or in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Occasionally of course the military has to kill people.A hard reality of life. But it should only ever be as a last resort & in accord w the law

“We’re making that decision”

Is the US now running Venezuela?
FOX & FRIENDS: What do you think is next for the Venezuelan people now that you have removed Maduro so he can face American justice?

TRUMP: Well, we're making that decision now. We can't take a chance on letting somebody else run it, just take over where he left off. So we're making that decision

Donald Trump’s and Pam Bondi’s corruption of the Rule of Law in America will continue apace until the American People stand up and cry out “No More. We’ve had enough. We are a nation of laws, not of men.”
August 26, 2025 at 4:36 PM
This is the problem.

Shed no tears for Maduro but mourn a rules based (imperfect as it was) international order.

Do we want a return to the conditions that sparked WWI and II?

Spoken like a man who knows how to try a case, and all the things that can go wrong.

One thing about trials. You never know. Doesn’t matter how well you prep the witnesses, how thoroughly you organize the documents, how detailed your cross exam outline. There *will* be surprises.
'...You often find out at trial that people dispute things, that you never thought would be disputed during the investigation...'
I hear you #JackSmith When defendants have their backs up against the proverbial wall, they might dispute anything & of course, lie

I like this. Am reminded of how much I loved reading what I wanted to read as a book loving kid, while at the same time I generally hated reading books assigned by teachers.

This says it all.
JACK SMITH: “We had proof beyond a reasonable doubt Trump engaged in a criminal scheme to overturn the results of the 2020 election, prevent the peaceful transfer of power, retained classified docs, obstructed justice… I’d charge an ex president again regardless of party.”

I wish him luck on his agenda but this is where the left loses me. They seem to always think things will just stay status quo. That you can just “tax the wealthiest few” without them deciding to … you know… pull up stakes and go elsewhere.
Mamdani: "The cost of childcare will no longer discourage young adults from starting a family, because we will deliver universal childcare for the many by taxing the wealthiest few"
