University of California campuses saw computer science enrollment drop -6% this year. With tech companies fully embracing senior engineers using AI over college hires, this is the logical result.

We’re going to be starved of a pipeline of software engineers in the future.
One of UC’s most popular majors sees declines for first time since dot-com bust
Undergraduate computer science enrollment across the UC system declined in 2025, data shows. Only one UC escaped the downward trend — and it’s the only campus to have launched an AI major.

Someone has sure already made this observation but the fact they can convert all those empty warehouses into prison camps means they could have converted them into housing, community centers, job training centers or, hell, libraries or schools all along. It’s always a matter of will not resources.

this is objectively true and this discourse here will never acknowledge it

I avoid this by having the stuff that matters set on autopilot+calibrating my internal "yeah whatever buy that shit" threshold to be in line with my current financial situation, and I still do dumb shit occasionally
I'm a financial advisor.

Humans are *very bad* at tracking, contextualizing, and understanding spending.

Like 80%+ of my clients who claim to live "paycheck to paycheck" have also immediately upgraded [car/house/electronics] significantly after minor pay increases.

Sitting back because 80+% of what's being built shouldn't have the effort wasted in the first place and most of the remainder is so poorly speced as to produce trash results.

I wonder how long it's going to take industry to relearn LoC is a hot garbage metric yet again.

i think i mostly echo this for myself. with so much that can be done, i often feel like i *should* be doing something, always

Measles is a bellwether. Because it’s the most contagious vaccine-preventable disease, when vaccination rates drop, it’s the first to start spreading.

Now we’ve got mumps rolling up.

Expect more.

This is just the beginning of RFK Jr.’s successful infectious disease reintroduction plan.

Why is the Black college graduation rate so low? Why do so many Black men go to college to play sports, and then drop out? Why did NIL passing increase college graduation rates and increase college sports revenue?

Ultimately, a wheelchair is a very good piece of very simple technology, that isn't prone to failure in case of computer issue or power failure. It, like any tool, has its own failure states - but I fully understand someone using one, even in the far Trek future.

And to tie it in to an older thread
As I've been on a roll with Star Trek threads today, let's continue with this one: you know one of the best parts of Geordie's visor?

90% of the time, nobody fucking mentions it.

Unpopular opinion: prenups can be fine and disagreement around them are usually things couples ought to discuss before getting married regardless, but both sides should have professional independent counsel if they get one.
